My workplace just went back to masking because it’s already kicking off to be a banger of a respiratory illness season. I’ll use whatever I can to remind people it’s not just about your comfort.

Be sure to get the new booster. I delayed getting it by a week and tested positive Saturday morning. Sinus + Upper Respiratory infection has been a fun thing to experience lmao.

Worst part so far was last night when I couldn’t tell I was eating expired kimchi until I took a closer look. Lack of smell or taste can be tricky lol.

You can tell when there are black marks across all the kimchi that weren’t there a week ago.

Still going to go buy a new jar whenever I test negative. I’ve been craving it badly.

I was going to get the booster last weekend but tested positive Friday. D: seems to be a fairly mild case, just an extremely terrible sore throat, and I’m doing Paxlovid - I’d call the taste similar to orange juice + toothpaste.

I can’t get another booster until November because of the timing of my last shot but definitely will. Getting my flu shot tomorrow though. The amount of plain old non-COVID respiratory illness in the hospitals around here is absolutely wild, like just plain old pneumonia.

Also just learned if I try blowing through my right nostril hard enough, I can blow air out of my left eye sinus passage. Covid has been a gift that keeps on giving.

      It’s definitely not over dude.

I caught it after one person infected over a dozen people at a birthday party last week.

I spent over two days locked to a couch unable to handle any food with a 104 fever and now I’m mostly just dealing with the leftover sinus & upper respiratory infection it caused.

And this is honestly one of the first covid posts I’ve seen here in a bit. No idea what you are talking about.

The woman is reading The Virtue of Selfishness by Ayn Rand. The meme is using the book as a caption, to highlight the selfishness of the woman’s actions (not wearing a mask). There’s an additional layer as well.

Ayn rand is an (incredibly horny) author. She developed Objectivism, a philosophical school of thought that functions off the idea of knowledge and values are objective. That “they exist and are determined by the nature of reality, to be discovered by one’s mind, and are not created by the thoughts one has”. Objectivism is popular among conservatives as it appeals to their world view. The “facts over feelings” crowd in particular loves to dickride Ayn Rand.

Some notable fans of her work include Elon Musk, Peter Theil, Amber Heard, Ben Shapiro, and Jordan Peterson. That’s not relevant to the meme, I just want to highlight that objectivism is a joke and the people who support it are awful.

Legit question. If I was an objectivist, would I need to agree with you that am awful as you discovered this knowledge with your mind and it is a fact determined by nature you have perceived? Or would I just disagree and say that my objectivist view trumps yours because I discovered it with my clearly right-beliving mind and correct interpretation of nature’s facts?

That’s kind of the crux of objectivism. Reality is very much subjective and informed by the individuals past, worldview and plenty of other things. Your perceived reality can change because you skipped breakfast and now that you’re hangry; boring, innocuous things are like nails on chalk board to you. There is no universal and objective truth to reality and anyone that would say otherwise is narrow minded and incurious.

To directly answer your question: the answer would be that as an objectivist you would disagree with me and say that your views trump mine for the reasons you stated. This train of thought is demonstrated every time Ben Shapiro opens his mouth in front of a camera

Conservatives are usually sexually repressed but they exalt a woman who wrote a lot of very kinky sex scenes in between her pseudo-philosophical ramblings. There’s been articles written trying to explain it within the framework of her philosophy but if youve ever attempted to read her stuff, you’ll know she was just mad horny lol

A lot of people still don’t understand that most masks are only really good for protecting others rather than the wearer and that this was the main point of asking people to wear them. I’ve seen people have revelations and change their opinion about masks upon having this explained.

Have you tried wearing an n95 mask while doing anything more strenuous than walking? I have no health issues at all and I can find it difficult to breathe. I don’t think obligating (legally or socially) people to wear n95 masks is realistic. Unfortunately, just like many socially charged issues in 2023 it just takes some common sense. I’m not implying you’re lacking, just my .02.

I’ve played basketball wearing an N95 and was perfectly fine, and that’s coming from someone who has shit conditioning and gets out of breath easily. I actually had a harder time breathing in a cloth mask because it was directly in contact with my face while playing. The N95 on the other hand provides an air pocket.

Wildland firefighters wear n95s while in 400 degree Fahrenheit heat. All while wearing up to 75 lbs of gear and carrying around heavy equipment. They literally choose to wear n95s for outdoor scenarios because they are lighter weight and easier to breathe in than their normal indoors masks.

If they can do that, I think we can wear them while we’re in a store or whatever.

Yeah, I found the same issue once I finally got my hands on any real N95s. Earlier I had built a mod for a cheap ARF-A gas mask that filtered both intake and exhaust using 3M P100 filters and that was dramatically superior to the airflow, moisture control, and overall comfort of the N95s I tried. As an added benefit, the eye coverings also kept me from absently touching my eyes like I often do, which is a major disease vector. I just look like a dork wearing it, but I’m used to that.

I blacksmith bro. I swing a 5 pound hammer with one hand for hours with a 1400° fire a few feet away from me, while wearing heat insulation gloves in the summer. I wear an N95 because if I don’t I’ll cough out coal dust for the next 2 days, and I’m sure as shit not looking forward to finding out how that feels when I’m 80. Oh and I’m significantly overweight. If I could do it everyone else is just bitching.

Why wouldn’t you use an appropriate respirator for that task? Any respirator would probably be okay, but I’m a big fan of the 3M 7500 series for comfort and exhaust control in case you’re wearing a face shield.

I agree they are not comfortable. They aren’t hard to breathe through, the real issue imo is communication, it’s very difficult to have a conversation with one on. I wear one on a regular basis, I would prefer not to, but I personally find it worth the tradeoff.

I repeat this to everyone I can. Obviously there is some personal benefit to wearing a mask but unless you’re being insanely careful about what you touch ALL the time it’s just not gonna do a whole lot. On the other hand if you’re hacking and spewing all over the place and you absolutely have to be out in public please, for the love of fucking God put politics aside and keep your bodily fluids to yourself.
