FAIR USE ARTICLES: EU

Article 5(1) of the European Union Copyright Directive (2001/29/EC) United States

Section 107 of the United States Copyright Act (17 U.S.C.) Germany

Section 53 of the German Copyright Act (Urheberrechtsgesetz)

These statutes provide the general framework for fair use in the EU, United States, and Germany. However, it is important to note that the fair use doctrine is a complex area of law, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of whether posting a particular news article to a forum would be considered fair use. If you are unsure whether posting a particular news article to a forum would be considered fair use, it is best to consult with an attorney.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind when determining whether a particular use of a news article on a forum would be considered fair use:

The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for non-profit educational purposes; The nature of the copyrighted work; The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and The effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. These factors are not exhaustive, and courts will consider all relevant factors when determining whether a particular use is fair use.

Super simple to use fair use copy/pasta. Find the one or two paragraphs from the article that illustrates the headline, then paste that, NOT the whole article.

Of course, my favored option is finding an alternate source that isn’t paywalled. :) No summary needed.

So, basically run it through some simple anti-plagiarism paper-cheating techniques? Fine.

Are links to demonetized sources for paywall penetration acceptable? Like internet archive, crap like that? I do hope so, I’m very grateful for the people that provide paywall bypass methods.

Your concern is my concern. From a news standpoint nothing should be behind a paywall IMO and hindering people’s ability to receive important news should be criminal. It’s just as bad as peer review journals being caught up in paywalls when you can just write a letter to the person responsible for the finding to get the paper for free.

I will try to seek out answers on this however I would advise you to directly contact admins for a better clarification into the details. I don’t want to mince words or accidently misrepresent facts. Just know I’m not trying to pass the buck I just don’t have all the answers.

However, our admins including AvaddonLFC are much for versed and knowledgeable in these matters, so I respectfully request that you ask them directly for a better understanding.

I wanna add that frequently a paywalled article is not breaking the story, but adding commentary. Sometimes there is simply a better source to link to!

I’d really like to see more meta develop in how to make great posts here. I prefer posts of different types - posts that direct conversation, posts that collect and collate info about a given topic and use comments to add to that archive of information.

I see this “I posted news, give me your hot takes” style forum as an exhausted format. On reddit it was frequently used and abused to promote certain narratives, promote mainstream corporate media over the journalists who are the source, who broke the story. Reddit was perfectly designed for bad actors and astroturfing.

    But here’s some constructive feedback:

    • Remove reposts that offer no change to the link / post content. You could repost to get it to a different time zone’s feed, yea, but then add something. A second link, a specific question?

    • News that many years old isn’t news. It’s at best political discussion. Finding old interviews with someone who’s in the news today can be valuable… But posting old news is often a way to misinform people. But is this community specifically about current events, or not?

We currently do not allow duplicate posts from the same source and do not allow news older than 14 days. We have removed posts that have violated those rules so I am confused by your feedback.

    Comparing people to animals

Yo, am I not to probe people to compare humans to animals for the sake of questioning existing violence towards animals? Am I not to suggest there’s no meaingful differences to justifty killing animals and uniquely spare humans?

Vegan btw. Comparison is not used in context to dehumanize.

Could we also update the sidebar? I see rule breaking content being posted, and part of it might be that the rules are a little hard to see. Right now, it’s a big wall of text.

I’ve reformatted/reworded it below, which you can feel free to take from :)

Hey, as long as I can still call someone a dingus for being a dingus, we’re cool.

In all seriousness, this is needed. Couple of times I have called for less dehumanizing language I have been called a sympathizer of some pretty bad things. It’s frustrating when folks fail to see that blasé use dehumanizing language is the necessary precursor to greenlighting atrocities.

Important reminder that stereotypes create prejudices and prejudice is a precursor to _______-ism. Stereotypes are culturally held beliefs about a culture or demographic that stem from a ‘kernel of truth’ which may or may not be ‘true’. (e.g. ‘white people are rich.’)

Prejudice is making decisions based on stereotypes.

______-ism is when prejudice takes a tangible toll on the people of that culture.

Challenge stereotypes. Call out prejudices. This is the path to affecting change in racism, sexism, et al.

Hey dingleberry you can slap me around and call me Sally for all you want but if you are going to suggest solving world problems requires a “final solution” then them there are fighting words. We have a responsibility to ourselves and everyone here to put hate on display so it can’t fester and grow.

How to use Bard to rewrite articles"

🤣 You’re saying one thing and meaning another. The first half are great values to stand by, and in making it clear you are okay with posting re-worded versions of a journalist or reporter’s article… It has me questioning what values you do hold. You are quite clearly using those first two values in a toothless or even hypocritical way.
