yeah but if you join, and your friends join, and they’re friends, you know what nevermind

[Edit] holy shit people I get it, people like it small, take it easy it’s just a meme, don’t need to keep commenting and DMing

Ehh, those are good and all, but there’s a lot more here than Linux and furry memes. Seems like you tend to see what you subscribe to.

Until a few days ago, that was like more than 50% of All > Hot. Logging into an instance where I do not have any blocked communities yet, it looks like that’s died down. The main list now looks like a normal website.

I’ve been browsing by all > new for the most part, or subscribed > new

I’ve seen furry and Linux stuff, but never seemed like a lot. Our minds tend to focus on what interests us, so I’ve mostly paid attention to tech posts and privacy, and being on a never-ending campaign to block all porn communities and reddit repost bots

Same on the campaign to block those. I originally allowed NSFW generally thinking I might miss some cool but off color posts, but the bar for NSFW is definitely high here. And copying Reddit content without the comments and interactions - especially Redditors’ personal stories like AITA or relationship advice - seems worthless and demeaning.

At this point, I’m very happy with it. It reminds me of my first days on Reddit 16 years ago, when it was all links to PDFs and tech talk that was so smart it was over my head.

Yeah, I really like the general vibe of Lemmy and the fediverse. I’m also quite pleased with how my instance is managed and how generally amicable the users are. I actually feel like I’m too snarky at times, compared to other people here.

I was only on reddit starting in 2011, and I feel like it was already a cesspool by then and only got worse. I like that this is not like reddit. I also want people to know that it’s not overly complicated to join or navigate, and tbh I don’t understand why some users think it doesn’t look appealing. It’s perfectly functional for me.

My one criticism of the fediverse are some of the unique privacy concerns, but it’s still a helluva lot better than mega-corporate reddit.

Anyway, I’m glad you’re here and glad I’m here (and I’m even glad the furries and Linux people are here). It feels like a breath of fresh air. Cheers.
