If you are going to use a xiaomi phone you have to at least put a custom ROM on it.

The issue is, as with most modern OSs, that the OS itself is chock full of spyware.
You can use MIUI by Xiaomi.eu. It’s a custom rom based on Chinese MIUI.
Chinese MIUI has more features than the other regional roms. Everytime they showcase a new MIUI version most of the features only arrive to the Chinese rom, all other regions get just basic stuff.

You jest but honestly if I’m going to be spied on and my data harvested either way I’d prefer if it was my home country. At least Theoretically something could be done about it like petition my elected officials or sue. Can’t really do that with a foreign country.
On the other hand, China has no jurisdiction over me and will deny to the five eyes countries any data it collects, or the fact that it collects anything at all. Worst they can do is deny me entry to the country because I say Free Tibet! and Xi Jinping looks like Winnie the Pooh! but I don’t plan travelling to China anytime soon so whatever.
But the western countries spying on what I do with my phone can put me on a no-fly list, terrorist watchlist or even arrest me when I say eg that direct action and sabotage against climate-destroying industries is justified and necessary if the powers-that-be make peaceful change of course impossible—as they are doing right now.

Not having jurisdiction has famously never stopped China. Just ask Tibet. Or any country that wants to sail international waters in the south China sea. Or Hong Kong. Or Taiwan.
Lastly, You are correct about China not sharing data with FVEY countries but don’t think for a second that they are not sharing that info with Russia, Iran, or any other countries that actively seek to harm.

Your theory is wrong. Americans overwhelmingly don’t care about privacy. And neither do your elected officials, who probably wouldn’t care if Americans cared anyway, because they’re deeply in the pockets of these corporations.
I was somewhat serious and I agree with you. If a foreign country attempts to use my data to target and manipulate me, it is more likely to be opposed to my best interests.

What version of Android? I thought this had to do with a certain version of Android. People were freaking out because they thought Android was going to natively make it harder to use 3rd party launchers but the truth was there was a version of Android that had a hard time with 3rd party launchers and gestures because it broke them and caused them to freak out or something.

This isn’t the default for others. In OneUI, for example, you can use a combination of both, even with 3rd party launchers. One-handed mode+, for example, is awesome for gestures.

No, that was on older software. On the latest ones you simply cannot use gestures with 3rd party launchers. My brother has one and I’ve tried it.

Gesture navigation (instead of having the navigation bar at the bottom edge of the screen). I’m too lazy to bother to ever learn to move away from the navigation bar myself, but maybe it’s great and I’m missing out on getting that extra bit of screen.

yeah but gestures were extremely broken and sucked on all android phones I’ve ever used (EXCEPT custom ROMs and Pixels) if used with a 3p launcher. actually just stick to a 3 button navbar.
In stark contrast to the other comment, I’ve hated gestures, and have actively switched every modern android I’ve gotten back to 3 buttons. And yeah, Nova Launcher till I die.
I had one XIAOMI phone, the Poco X3 NFC. Worst phone experience I’ve ever had, entirely due to their supremely shitty OS mutation.
