It’s a mess that at the moment there are no real competitors with the amount of Videos of YouTube. The only possibility at the moment is to use a Frond-end, like JewTube, CloudTube, Piped, a Desktop client like FreeTube, or if you need to share a YT vidieo, to watch it sandboxed in the search results of Andisearch and copy the link from there.

I quit YouTube (you can delete your YouTube data without deleting the Google account btw) and I feel better. I couldn’t find anything interesting there for the love of me. I intend to binge cozy Minecraft letsplays on Odysee once I have Internet again. I really hate videos as a format. They have use, but they’re by far overused. I strongly encourage everyone to reject what companies want us to use, look inside and reflect on what you need and what brings you happiness, then abandon corporate, delete your data and thrive.

I don’t completely mind. This is a boon to platforms like Nebula and CuriosityStream, which I think respect creators more with revenue and users with no ads. Sure it’s not free but there are no shennanigans like this.

It’s been ages since I have entered the youtube.com domain, I use the libredirect extension to go to invidious instances. Sometimes the instances are blocked and I have to try another one but its a small price to pay for internet freedom. Still, google is trying to sue invidious for using their API, which they don’t, they just scrape the website, but I would like to see the bullshit google comes out with.

I’m on vacation for the next two weeks. I only really need to log into Google for work. I got proton mail subscription and I’ve been moving all my personal stuff to that slowly. I’m going to finish it off and just cut Google out completely for personal use.

Yeah for real. Enshittification has gotten me permanently off Facebook for like 4 years and Twitter for like 10. Reddit now for a few months. Getting ready to leave YouTube.

I have been playing guitar a lot more lately 😊

Been telling myself I need to get more exercise…

Are you me? I have been off of Twitter and Facebook for years now. Reddit is dead to me. YouTube seems like it’s heading in the shitter. I’ve also been playing more guitar lately too! I’m still early on, I think I’m progressing nicely but I’m firmly in the “novice” stage. Take it from someone who didn’t exercise at all before, you’ll do yourself great even taking a nice walk for 20-30 minutes every day possible. It gets easier everyday, and they become enjoyable.

Can you recommend some general forums that focus on a wide array of topics? Or do you only visit niché community forums?

The fediverse makes the internet feel more alive than ever.

It feels less mindless scrolling and more interaction.

There are also discussions and (small) flame wars ☺️

Feels like ‘back in the day’ where everything was a bit wonky but people could actually help eachother (and not being nudge nudge nudged all the time to be distracted by something else).

The illusion of infinite growth on “free use” ad based business dies when investment funds demand more benefits from former startups now turned into corporations whose only asset of value is the their users’ data. You are the product, so it’s time to squeeze you.

I think such data is currently overvalued on a overgrown ad-targeting market with too many competitors, and adding more ads only devaluates each ad value further, because users’ consuming capacity also has a limit. So I see a severe correction coming. Another bubble burst, and another crisis inside the crisis that late capitalism itself is.

Corporate profits and soulless capitalism aside. Do you think that petabytes of server space and countless hours of making videos for your entertainment should be free?

I mean lets imagine we create a space for creators to upload without most of the revenue going to a fat ceo. There are no algorithms tweaked for constant numbing entertainment just to squeeze every last minute of our attention. Just a platform for people to talk about their passion and create content heaps better than the shit on the tv. Would we still be bitching that it should be free? Because i think we would

Maybe we wouldn’t be so mad if their paid offerings weren’t worse than using an adblock or third-party download tools.

For context, if you download a video you have to have been online on YouTube in a timespan of 3 days with YouTube Premium to actually watch it offline.

They need to know you’ve actually paid for the content. Its the norm with streaming apps, even if the music is on your device it still needs to be authorized to actually play it. Otherwise you would be able to download as much content as possible within one billing period, cancel your subscription and enjoy hundreds of dollars worth of music for one monthly fee.

Their paid offerings suck in more ways than this sadly. Youtube search sucks balls even if you pay for premium. They constantly ask you to watch their “shorts”, and small creators sometimes have a very hard time staying monetized because of bullshit that youtube makes them go through. It is partially our fault tho, collectively we watch the dumbest shit. Logan Paul had shitloads of subscribers and made a fortune because thats what normal prople like to watch.

Quick! Let’s move all Youtube channels to the fediverse (PeerTube), before people are getting conditioned to another sick behavior created by rich people.
