Ngl, I’ve been considering just taking the plunge (no pun intended, it is a good one though) and just exporting all my subscriptions and watching everything on piped.video. that way I get a curated feed of content I enjoy (which is what I already like about lemmy), and be able to curb my youtube shorts addiction into the ground with it.

it’s just better even as UI. you can pick all the settings:

      • set default video resolution
      • autoplay
      • allow/skip ads
      • allow/skip sponsor messages
      • play audio only
      • hide suggested vidya/comments/description (toggle)
      • dark mode
      • no tracking
      • no email required for account
      • toggle shorts on/off
      • should homepage be trending or subscription feed?

I mean what the hell else can you want?

Enjoy paying the rest of your life (or until you’re done with YouTube) a subscription to remove ads. It’s basically cable Tv for you, until they start adding ads to you anyway. The profit must grow, a company must grow, they will show you ads again.

You gave them your finger, they’ll be coming for your arms.

Will do. I pay monthly for services I use a lot less than I use YouTube, I get to easily support creators I watch and I get YouTube Music on top of it.

If they change the deal then I’m free to change my mind, it’s not like I’m forced to stay subbed if they add back ads, but as far as today goes I’m not gonna get all twisted up over a hypothetical.

Yeah I am really confused why people are mad. Sure it sucks that something was free with no ads now has ads/isn’t free. But was it not obvious that YouTube is unsustainable without adding some kind of income, ads or subscription charges? This day was always coming. I am actually kind of surprised how long it took for YouTube to start combating ads blocks.

YouTube for all its faults, is an incredible service. I know of no alternative service like it. It costs money to run YouTube why should they provide it for free?

Why should they be free though? Outside a capitalist economy sure, but the way things are people need to make money. Premium gives a much larger cut to the channels you watch than regular ad watching anyway.

I use Newpipe on my android phone and SmartTube (previously called SmartTubeNext) on my android tv.

Both are super simple to install and use and neither suffer from the extreme lag that federated frontends like Piped, Invidious and LibreTube often do…

I usedb Vanced and tried ReVancedv after that. The app patches would fail even though I made sure that all settings and other conditions were exactly as the setup and troubleshooting guides recommended and eventually I just gave up trying.

With NewPipe and SmartTube, all of the things the OP and you mentioned just work out of the box and changing features and other settings is as easy as in for example Firefox…

Personally how the app looks isn’t much of a priority unless it’s so bad that it hurts usability and maybe 7/10 times I tried to play a video in Libretube it would either hang for at least a minute or fail to play at all.

That’s just not an acceptable tradeoff for looking slightly better than NextPipe that’s near-flawless on my phone and SmartTube that’s near-flawless on my tv, neither of which is bad-looking IMO 🤷

that’s completely acceptable. i like when apps integrate with my Monet color theming and I’ve never had issues loading video after i turned off the Piped proxy, basically just turning it into NewPipe with a different look. In my experience, don’t turn that on unless you have a specific reason to. It leads to video loading issues just like you found.

Some things I like about LibreTube:

          • The PiP functionally works better than in Newpipe
          • I can see the likes and dislikes of comments and expand the thread to see more comments
          • Swipe gestures to enter and exit fullscreen just like on the normal YT app
          • I can view a content creators content by Livestream, Short, normal video etc. for some reason shorts just don’t show up in Newpipe
          • SponsorBlock integrated. I am aware there is Newpipe x SponsorBlock

If NewPipe has a way to add the above functionality, I’ll gladly try it again!

Let me get all the hate.

No ads= no income for the YouTube content creators. “But you can support them directly” But do you? I guess 0.1% of viewers buy merch or donate or are patreo subscribers. How do you want to get good content on YouTube without anyone paying for it? Can’t be mad if the content is getting worse and the sponsor messages are getting more and more.

In the past, I didn’t block ads on YouTube for the reason you describe. The amount has increased so much over the last couple of years that I had to start - multiple unskippable ads before a video are just not acceptable.

Instead I subscribe to Patreons (which I swap around every couple of weeks depending on who I watch the most).

I only started when a 1:00 video had 0:30 unskippable ads at the beginning and another 0:30 at the end. If the ad is more than the video why bother watching the ads.

I’ve also had moments were I wanted to see 1 specific point for a couple seconds, but just have to watch unskippable ads before I can scroll to the part I wanted to check (like a tutorial part).

Most YT creators are getting most of their money from the sponsors they promote. YT ads suck for revenue unless you’re gigantic and with how yt will demonetize you for literally anything it’s too unreliable too be sustainable.

Sponsorblock supports Invidious. Go into the Sponsorblock settings under Misc and enable it. You might have to add an instance’s URL (on the same settings page).

In your Invidious local settings, there should be a “Feed Menu” setting. This allows you to choose which tabs appear on your local homepage. (If you have an account, then these settings are for your account and should persistent anywhere you log in.) You should be able to choose “Popular” or “Trending” as one or more of your tabs.

For FreeTube, you can copy the link from your browser (from YouTube or any Invidious instances at least) and paste it into FreeTube’s search bar, and it will go directly to the desired video. If you use Firefox, Privacy Redirect has a setting (under Advanced Settings --> Invidious) to redirect all YouTube requests to FreeTube. You would have to turn the plugin off to search, then turn it on when you want to use it.

FreeTube currently has two sections “Most Popular” and “Trending” that fetch content from creators I haven’t subscribed to.

      Hope this helps.

Well their real business model is making YouTube shitty with ads, and then offering YouTube Premium as the solution. Nice, you artificially create a problem, then provide a subscription plan.

Yep, that’s all companies mill you these days. Do something stupid to piss off your user base, and then instead of fix it for free… sell the solution. Then they wonder why stock prices drop, and people move to other competing services.
