The morbidly funny thing is that the capitalists killed it. They had to wring every last drop of profit out of it, which makes it corrosive. Also the Cold War meant it Was Not Okay to move in any direction even close to socialist policy.

The Cold War ensured capitalists had to temper their appetites. You couldn’t go too far or the working class could revolt and would be backed by actual foreign communists. This is why programs such a Social Security, Medicare, Medicare, The New Deal and the Great Society came from. They were all ways of keeping full on communism at bay and placating real criticisms of a capitalist state like the USA. Much of Europe’s social safety net was also put in place during the Cold War.

Now the entire world has some flavor of crony capitalism or straight up facism. In this environment capitalists can go as far as they want with no fear of real consequences. Which is why you see calls to end those socialist programs.

I loved this, yes, very helpful. Ownership is centralizing, everything is rented. Tech makes it possible. There is a long way to go to unravel those issues
