There’s been a solution of, provided two usable graphics processors, running Linux and virtualizing Windows underneath it with the gaming GPU for only a 5-8% loss.

Way to complex. And also way too much work to have it break the next update. As much as I love Linux (hell, I’ve been using Linux on and off since 2004, when I was 14 and got my first hand me down Laptop…) and as much as I admire the progress…it still isn’t there, especially with peripherals. Getting a DD to work on Linux is a nightmare.

Portable and pretty budget, a G29 + arduino with a large LCD to show live dashboard data, head tracking with OpenTrack + PS3 Eye webcam (extremely versatile camera, pretty handy for machine vision with its 120FPS support. Only downside is 640x480 max res, and the 4x array mics only work on Linux)

Only outlier is stick shift running via the Arduino for a few reasons, mainly to reduce wires and setup/packing time (need my desk for other things too, sadly can’t afford a permanent rig), and also to avoid mapping the gears in new games. I just switch between usb emulation of a known device, or sending keypresses 1-6, R

Honestly, that doesn’t even sound that difficult to run on Linux.

It’s usually the purpose-built hardware that messes up Linux support (i.e. controlling RGB keyboards, Stream Decks, that sort of thing), a DIY setup like yours shouldn’t be that hard to port.

Then again, if you’re happy with Windows, stick with it. There’s not that much difference between maintaining a collection of hacks and registry settings to turn off Windows’ bullshit compared to installing Linux, this is a pick-your-battles thing.

I’m one of those that just can’t avoid using windows at work. At least at work they come with a very useful adition, windows sysadmins. They already learned that giving Linux apecialists admin rights. (It gets harder and harder to deny any Windows knowledge)

Haven’t used windows at home since 3.11.

Weird that my wife got no such notice when her HDD was completely full. Yesterday she came to me asking why she couldn’t install something. I checked her HDD and it was 100% full. No notifications for her at all.

I don’t get a single one of these popups and annoying things the entire Internet seems to get. No ads, no notifications, no popups, nothing. I don’t get it. It’s like there’s a metroPCS windows that everyone is using.

They love to bring up silly little problems that just straight up have an option in the setting if they cared to look.

My favourite is the “Show recommendations for tips, shortcuts, new apps, and more” setting that disable all the ads they like to complain about.

There’s a wide variety of ways in which Microsoft adds more and more annoying shit to Windows, but this isn’t one of them. It’s a harmless, helpful reminder.

I got the message in Windows once or twice. It was easily dismissed. I got the message every time I booted Linux for a while.

I don’t even mind something like this. File systems slow down when they get filled and hard drives are especially hard to get decent performance out of when you fill them up more than a certain percentage. Yes, even on Linux fragmentation exists, and no, there is no automatic defragmenting nor is there any GUI you can click to fix fragmentation once you’ve cleared up space.

With how much ammo Microsoft gives Linux fans, I’m baffled by someone getting upset by a “your disk is nearly full” warning that any usable OS will send you.

Probably doesn’t have auto defrag because God forbid the OS do anything useful for you without a hundred terminal commands and a two hour setup lest all the sweaty arch users barge in with claims of bloat and “reeeeee why can’t I just decide for myself”.

I’m also annoyed by it. I get why it exists, as I’ve met people with zero clue about drive space, but Windows really shouldn’t permanently attach training wheels to the bike.

I’d love a Windows hard mode button, but I guess that’s just Linux now. If only work didn’t need me to have Windows.

Windows plays dirty, it’s never kernel-on-kernel. Once it removed my wifi access in Linux out of spite. Gouge out the eyes and earn easy victory, but for as long as there remains the flash drive there is no true death amongst OSs.

Feels like his response makes sense on the surface, but ultimately silly. You don’t need to be a guru at Active Directory or GUI development to know how to navigate your OS competently.

Regardless, I’d even just opt for a, “don’t fucking bother me about literally anything,” button. But then Microsoft can’t push whatever bullshit product they’re trying to give you exposure to or sell.

microsoft’s version of ‘hard mode’ is removing gui for settings–hiding them them in registry entries or (unavailable in ‘home’ edition) group policy… or removing them completely and needing actual hacks of binaries to do.

So sick of all the feedback, rate us, try this feature, what’s new, turn on feature x, etc. that seems to be a part of everything nowadays, even Linux apps. Linux wasn’t this bad only a few years ago and mobile OSs cranked this up to 10.

    • If I want to rate an app, I’ll look under feedback in the help menu.
    • If I want to see what’s new, show me the changelog…once, right after I update.
    • If I want to turn a feature on/off put descriptive toggles in the settings menu.

Everything that can be seen from the default view should 100% revolve around fulfilling the function of the app for the user. Human attention is a finite thing and we shouldn’t be wasting it on shit like this.
