Excellent work
Big mistake to make on the Internet is to call the Internet’s bluff if you’re at the centre of a controversy. It’s not unlike the Streisand Effect.
r/Wellthatsucks is now a subreddit about vacuum cleaners.
I love it
This stuff is funny, but that’s the problem, Redditors love funny events like The Snap, and they love drama and controversy
You can see it’s not hurting Reddit at all maybe even helping them
https://blackout.photon-reddit.com/
The real solution is to share links to Lemmy communities as replacements and just leave Reddit, turn off whatever auto moderation tools they have and just let the place burn, or maybe even worse be overly strict on moderation lol
They permanently blocked me for sharing lemmy links before blackout. One more reason to do it, link aggregator not allowing links!
- Some of the biggest communities like r/pics, r/aww, and r/GIF decided to post John Oliver pictures and GIFs. In a tweet, Oliver approved this move.
- In the case of r/aww, the community is also allowed to post pictures of Chiijohn.
- r/iPhone decided to post pictures celebrating “dashing” Tim Cook.
- r/Shitposting banned posts with the letter k.
- r/Wellthatsucks is now a subreddit about vacuum cleaners.
- r/Nofans is now a passive PC cooler subreddit.
- r/Interestingasfuck removed a lot of all rules apart from asking members to not break site-wide rules.
- r/Memes is allowing only Medieval / Landed Gentry memes. This is in response to Huffman’s “Landed Gentry” comment about protesting subreddits.
- r/PokemonGo is now allowing pictures of John Oliver, Pikachu, or Spark.
- r/Horny is now a “Christian Minecraft server.”
- r/Steam members are posting about actual steam.
- r/HarryPotter is now referring to Huffman as Voldemort.
- Some subreddits such as r/Showerthoughts are determining close days for the community.
Glorious.
Shitposting is funny because the auto mod they are using to remove posts cites removing the post in order to save bandwidth for Reddit. The auto mod post is much longer than post being removed and contains K’s. I found it funny anyway.
One of the legal advice subs – I can’t remember which – was going forward requiring post approval from mods because they value community safety. But as they are unpaid volunteers they estimate it could take up to 14 days for post approval.
I think that was /r/scams. Their post was fantastic
Oh man. I wouldn’t want to anger a bunch of people who make it a hobby to fight scammers in a social psychology arms race.
Lol this honestly makes me want to go back
I feel you, but in the end it’s just garbage content to piss off reddit admins and execs. Personally, I’d rather get quality content from the fediverse now, but I can understand that some people want to burn that other place down.
It feels empowering to be part of a pissed off collective.
r/formula1 is reopening as NSFW to “comply to the fullest extent of our abilities with these changes”:
Formula 1 is inherently dangerous. Crashes and injuries are not uncommon - some even with fatal results. These incidents are discussed on r/formula1, and videos, images and other media are posted following these events.
Formula 1 includes messaging and sponsors that are connected to alcohol, tobacco and gambling - all of which are legislatively prohibited or age restricted in various locations. We cannot prevent these from being displayed to underaged users, as they are incorporated in general Formula 1 imagery and content.
Formula 1 is known for, both in the past and today, to include certain risque imagery that fall within the NSFW space.
Reddit’s User Agreement states that “Children under the age of 13 are not allowed to create an Account or otherwise use the Services.” - As such it stands to reason that persons under legal age participate in r/formula1.
Switching our classification means Reddit’s age verification shields underage users from being exposed to content considered harmful.
Brilliant! Simply brilliant!
/r/Piracy also celebrated the fact that reddit officially endorsed them.
Absolutely fucking glorious!
It makes me so happy seeing reddit come together against this bullshit
You just know that John Oliver is sitting at home right now laughing his ass off at the memes, and then screaming into a pillow because he can’t talk about it anywhere due to the writer’s strike.
He laughed and then tweeted some more source material for them to run with. He’s loving this.
Gotta give it to Redditors, they can be quite creative when it’s time to throw shit on the fan.
ngl, all this makes me want to go back to reddit
It’s funny for about 10 minutes, then you realize it’s all John Oliver posts, and it might as well be a private sun again. It’s working. Lots of my subs are also paralyzed by reddit news and spez being an asshole, so there’s not top much going on for my subs, save for a select few, like some gardening ones. Haven’t found a replacement yet for those :(
Oh man there are tons of gardening communities on Lemmy, I saw them!
Same, but I refuse to give them my traffic.
yeah same I went cold turkey off reddit for like 24 hours before I realised not going there was a big improvement. Real shame as once upon a time it was a great place to get unique perspectives on interesting issues. Will be missed.
I had a similar experience; Moved to Lemmy cold turkey and have only looked back to laugh
"r/Horny is now a “Christian Minecraft server.”
That shit is genius. Not a fan of all this mess. But it has led to new and cool places while creating some funny as hell content with the fallout.
A Red Bull Formula 1 team themed Minecraft server?
(Christian Horner is the team principal for Red Bull Racing. And is also married to Geri “Ginger Spice” Halliwell).
Well done. Like true reddit. Lemmy is great and I don’t look at Reddit anymore.
My favourite one is anime_titties has a poll about whether to continue with their world political topics or change to a highly moderated pic forum of anime boobs.
On /r/interestingasfuck I just saw a woman with a speculum holding her ass open as someone else poured milk and cereal into it. Yes they ate it.
So that’s my day so far
Upvoted even though I hate this comment
Wow that’s a classic! I haven’t seen that video in the wild since the early internet!
There might be something wrong with me for that to be nostalgic…
Is that what “2 girls 1 cup” was?
I’m actually good at not going and looking at these things, so I end up out of the loop. Which decision I am 99.9% happy with lol. But a text description would not be amiss.
I was going to explain what 2 girls 1 cup was, then i thought better of it as it is better off not being explained
I know that this probably won’t work as stubbornly idiotic as Huffman seems to be doubling down but god isn’t that amazing.
What’s fascinating is the sudden increase of people whining about this. If this kind of stuff bothers them imagine how bad it is when these moderators leave completely? I know a subreddit based on interesting things have completely lowered their standards as a protest and it shows.
If you want to see people really whine, just go on r/JustUnsubbed, you’ll see a bunch of people moaning and groaning about this
I just peeped. So many are clueless and simping to spez
Big Corpo simping is ultra cringe
My friend is no longer using reddit because his front page is mostly porn now (and the default app sucks at hiding it). So I got him to switch to lemmy :)
But if anything, this is an even better protest. Much more effective and hard to deal with
Yep! Its technically reopening and it makes the spez simps mad. Honestly reddit deserves the worst.
I’ve also had friends say reddit is too toxic now. Well, yeah. Mods aren’t modding and the nicer people are over here. It’ll be interesting to see how much they recover. Clearly they knew this would cost them with their users, but hopefully it’s substantially more than they expected.
@itmightbethew These are all great but /r/interestingasfuck seems to have hit on something that could have a real impact: Reddit apparently can’t sell advertising on NSFW subs. Imagine if /r/pics and /r/aww and other tip subs just opened themselves up to whatever, it would down Reddit in porn and destroy the site’s reputation. I’m sure the admins would try to force them back to SFW, but it could be a powerful tactic.
That NSFW post on r/interestingasfuck has reached r/all lmfao
You’re dead right. If $$$ are Spez’s priority then that’s what we should target. A knock on effect is that it catches the attention of the casual redditor. I have a couple friends who read reddit but were clueless on these issues. Until the NSFW content. One DM’d me tonight
"“I was on lunch, and I was like “WTF happened to my reddit feed??””
so that’s working
What are the admins going to do? Moderate? If the moderators are approving NSFW posts, the sub is NSFW… Heck I’m not sure if they have to go that far. On r/cigars every single post is NSFW because cigars are Satan. Just do that to all the subs so every single post requires you to click to reveal the NSFW content. It’ll be like NSFW roulette. Heads, it’s a helpful guide to setting up a service on the cloud. Tails, it’s goatse.
Throw in some random gore there for the nuclear option. NSFL is NSFW. And reddit never bothered to distinguish the two so let them down in yet more of their own poor decisions
Worse than that, Reddit banned all the NSFW subs from /all but DIDN’T ban the NSFL sub. So now instead of and unfiltered /all, with a mix of all the best everything, it’s now a curated collection of no porn and the occasional gore.
I think they just banned the mod from r/celebrity for turning the sub NSFW
Haven’t been back to reddit since i joined lemmy. I like it here.
Yeah, same. I like that it’s a smaller, newer community. Not yet overrun with trolls and bots.
