When Christian fundamentalists dictate weird rules for what women should wear, let’s condemn them.

When Muslim fundies do the same, (going much further in fact) let’s accuse the poster of hate 🙃

Turns out, countries where religious extremists are stuck in the past and were allowed political power tend to legitimate killing by the state (also looking at you here, USA). They’re also perfectly fine with women dying for that, so I don’t think this statement is wrong when applied to extremists of any related religion.

I’m glad this community is not standing for the double standard of being allowed to condemn Christianity but not ‘poor, defenseless Islam’ - which is growing more that any other religion in the West.

And the 1 century death cult is better in what way exactly? Just wanna remind you that those modesty rules where prevalent in Christianity as well as. Maybe not always to the same degree but the church had very interesting thoughts about woman wearing pants or showing their ankles.

If you are religious, no matter the denomination, you‘d better not be poking fun at other religions for their quirks. Yours is just as silly and baseless as the others.

Also, not all muslims follow those strict rules just as very few christians would still shun you for eating shrimp or living with someone before marriage.

Yes Christianity is also bad. Same with Judaism or any other religions. Most of them are death cults

I don’t like OP’s strangely aggressive takes here, or their general lack of empathy in this regard, but I did not see them mentioning being a Christian or anything else, so this is just a moot and as such, an embarrassingly rehearsed point to raise.

“Someone else is almost as bad as this” is not the defense you may think it is. And I would bet most people on lemmy are either agnostic or atheist. So that’s just a hit and a miss as a whole.

I feel for the sentiment and agree on most other occasions, but this one is literally about hiding your entire body, and in the current state of the world, the only ones having that very rule happen to also be the almost any other time too eagerly singled out “brown people”, as you said.

It’s not unfairly singling out, if it regards a thing only the target of the critique do.

Sincere question: would a baggy coat or rain mac be acceptable on the outside, since it still disguises the figure?

Also, if you’re out and about and wearing a coat underneath but then decide that you’re too hot, what’s the best way to remove it whilst keeping your modesty?

calling Islam a 7th century death cult is very racist.

Far from all Muslim people advocate for controlling women like that. Make your point about sexism, but please do it without the racism.

//EDIT: I knew people would get angry about my use of the word ‘racist’, when I made the post, but I hoped people wouldn’t be so nitpicky. Of course I know people of any race can be Muslim, but the idea of race is much more than just the colour of a person’s skin. Race is tied to culture is tied to religion. I could have used any word instead of racist, like ‘anti-muslim’, ‘xenophobic’ or just plain ‘hateful’. I used racist, because I believe all these things are connected, and by calling it racist I hope people can see that.

Also, I’m an atheist myself, but Atheists really need to stop our war on religion. I hate organized religion and I will fight discrimination when I see it. But let people be.

Islam is not a “race”. it’s not an immutable property of a person.

Tying a specific religion to a race is racist. Without further comments, OP’s post is antireligious.

I “let people be” when their religion doesn’t harm them or other people.

And I don’t care if “not all Muslims think of women that way”. Their decisions/opinions make them better people, they don’t make Islam a better religion.

This is, of course, not limited to Islam.
