France’s left-wing and centrist parties have withdrawn hundreds of candidates from Sunday’s parliamentary elections, in a move aimed at thwarting the formation of the country’s first far-right government since World War II.
Macron’s centrists and the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) hope they can prevent such an event, with the president telling a closed-door meeting of ministers at the Elysee Palace on Tuesday that the top priority was blocking the RN from power.
That would involve supporting members of the far-left France Unbowed party (LFI) if necessary, Macron said, despite some opposition from members of his own party.
I wish news organizations would call our republican and dem parties in the United States far right and center right, respectively….
As a non American, i call them both far right.
I’ve been deeply frustrated by Macron’s choices in a lot of areas, but I’m really glad he and his party appear to recognize the gravity of the situation and are actually being pragmatic about building a firewall against the far right in France.
I usually have a good amount of contempt for Macron and his actions but if he will hurt his own party to ensure the far right doesn’t take over then he deserves some props.
Yeah, I’m actually shocked France remembers how Popular Fronts are supposed to work.
I feel like all this effort in a variety of countries will only delay the far right for a short period. The far right will be in charge of a large number of western governments and ultimately be the new world order within a few years and I don’t now see any way to stop that. The French might hold it back this election but unless how they handle the far right changes it will continue to grow and win the next one and no amount of manipulation will change it.
I don’t see that at all. The right is in such an abysmal state in Australia that I can’t see them doing much of anything for a decade or more still.
From my experience, once the people reject them it sticks a bit.
