I keep reading about people who have “passed”.
Passed what? A test? Water? Wind? Another person?
No, they’ve died.
What happened to plain English? “XYZ has died. RIP”

People have a fear of death. Personally, I accept it as part of the cycle of life.
I’ve heard people use “passed,” to refer to people dying for my entire life. Nothing has happened to plain English, you’ve just been living under a rock apparently.
“Passed on to the next life”
Passed away: This has been used in plain English since the 14th century. This is also a respectful way to say that they passed away to another realm (to whatever people believe in).
