Original article author here 👋🏼 thank you for posting the link to it @Ludrol@szmer.info - I was afraid what the reactions may be 😅

I’m writing this from the iOS app Voyager - interestingly, I didn’t get any notifications about the mention (my Lemmy username) but found the post organically because I follow the Fediverse community.

After a day of testimonies (from users on Lemmy, Mbin, Mastodon and Friendica) I am now determined to write a follow-up post with more interoperability tests.

I realize some of the problems I encountered - federation-wise - may be due to the particular instances I was using (on Lemmy and Friendica for example) not the software, so I’m going to create new accounts on other instances and try out interoperability again.

By the end of this I may find myself with a dozen Fediverse accounts LOL 😅

Thank you again for the great feedback and tips, I really appreciate 🙏

Thank you writing it! I went back and read your whole series!

The promise of seemless interoperability in social media is really cool to me! The devs making it happen are just awesome.

Have you checked out peertube yet?

Elena put their finger on an especially weak spot for Lemmy and PieFed, where Mastodon integration is somewhat of an afterthought. There is some integration but it doesn’t really work the way they expected it to.

The ideal of “everything talks to everything” still remains elusive.

These days I’m less sure it’s even a good goal to have - content on different platforms doesn’t always ‘fit’ in others. Mastodon posts lack a title so look awkward on Lemmy, Wordpress blog posts are often long, causing some Mastodon mobile apps to make their users scroll for days, Peertube videos often have a bunch of “here’s how you can give me money” links in the body which look spammy out of context, etc.

Some platforms are a more natural fit for each other than others.

Definitely. The Mbin way of having the two types of content accessible but separate seems a bit better at least.

Interesting to see Lemmy from the perspective of a Mastodon user. I never used Twitter and I have no interest in Mastodon, but it certainly seems like a tremendous advantage to be able to cross pollinate with them, given their sizeable userbase. There is definitely more work to be done on streamlining federation between platforms, but its an inherently tricky problem so I’m not surprised.

Lemmy/Piefed/Mbin are still at the stage where they are trying to complete their own core features, so there hasn’t been as much focus on bridging to the rest of the fediverse. Mastodon is a more mature software so they probably had more time to work on extra features like cross-platform federation.

You would think so, but afaik Mastodon hasn’t made any changes to federation in years. Which means it is left to other projects like Lemmy to reverse engineer whatever Mastodon is doing and implement that, no matter what the standards say.

Mastodon also has the benefit that other platforms try their best to federate with it

Good post. I’ve been on Lemmy for a while (jeez, look at my account stats) but Mbin is starting to look more mature lately, especially with the fact that it works with Mastodon.
