This is something I’ve had a really hard time drilling into peoples’ heads. Based on current data, the average EV battery built today wont fail in 10-15 years; they’ll just degrade 10-15%. And yeah, in that time period, at current gas/electricity rates, I’ll have saved $30K in gas alone (I saved 2K last year * 15 years = $30K) and it stands to reason that gas prices will continue to climb. Electricity as well but once it hits 20 cents per kWh for me, I’m getting solar.
I don’t know that I fully support mandatory retirement age or term limits, but something has to be done about out how poorly the demographics of government align with the demographics of the nation

Oh yeah that’s been over for over a year at this point. We’re on month 7 of 12 fulfillment. Bummer you missed it! It was expensive ($600 for all four books and all eight loot boxes plus audiobooks) but it has felt super worth it for me so far (I’m a mega fan though to be fair)
Yeah I have no problems with big companies making kickstarters. When Brandon Sanderson launched his last year, I loved it, because he obviously would’ve had no issue getting those four books published, but it was a way to gauge interest in special editions and swag boxes.
Likewise, lots of board game companies have the games totally finished but basically use Kickstarter as a fancy preorder system

What if you carefully distribute the weight of your laundry evenly? Mine doesn’t have an agitator but whenever I’m loading laundry, I make sure to do it in the shape of a donut, evenly distributed around the drum so that it doesn’t get thrown off
Depends on what the goal was. If the goal was to have so many people leave reddit that it dies, then yeah. Nowhere near strong enough for that (and I don’t think that was ever going to happen).
If the goal was to get enough people motivated to make an alternative (like this one or kbin or whatever) viable, then I think it was extremely effective. Prior to June, these spaces didn’t have enough content and discussion to be entertaining for me personally. But I deleted my reddit account on June 30th, and I haven’t once regretted that or gone back to the site because Lemmy has been enough
Yeah, I personally don’t want that. I want to be able to log in to mastodon or lemmy without needing a facebook account and be able to interact with my less tech savvy friends and family, as well as get news from journalists/bands/sports teams/etc.
Are you sure that’s what you got banned for? Like, did you get a message saying that’s why? I’ve literally never heard of someone getting site banned for mild name calling.
Yeah, I’m cautiously optimistic that if they do truly join the fediverse, we’ll finally have our real twitter replacement (aka relatively community friendly tech that’s accessible to people who don’t want to hear the word instance, AND the big benefit that basically everybody already has an instagram account). I haven’t used twitter since the musk takeover, but a lot of people whose opinions and reporting I care about still do. Most of them never bothered with the migration to mastodon, although lots of them are on bluesky. I’m hoping that the easy of availability of Threads gets them over there, and that the fediverse connection doesn’t take too long so I can start to interact with them via Mastodon without having to agree to all those permissions. Sorry, kinda lost the plot there.
I get why too. I’m a full stack (including devops) software engineer, and docker/k8s is just completely opaque to me. I’m not sure why, but I really just can’t wrap my head around it. Thankfully my current company has a devops team that takes care of it, but jeez

A few years ago I hit a point where the Google graveyard got so large that I no longer trust them with any of my stuff. I know the mantra is to always have multiple backups of important stuff, but I’ve started doing Google drive, OneDrive, iCloud, AND local (own cloud) copies of stuff because you just never know when Google is going to decide to kill Google maps or Google photos or whatever.

My product DOES support Firefox, but there are some weird animation quirks that my team has been trying to solve, but with limited bandwidth and a full product backlog, it’s hard to justify spending too much time supporting a browser with such small global utilization. Especially since we’re using third party libraries like angular material, quirks on smaller browsers can be a nightmare to chase down
