Porcupines cannot throw their quills. Quills are modified hairs that are loosely attached. What they can do is bristle, raising the quills away from their body and making it more likely for the pointy bits to find a target. They can also slap with their tail, which also has quills.
Don’t feed the animals. Especially porcupines, they’ll eat a hole in the side of your house to get at the food

They’ll also pop holes in your tires in the winter trying to eat the road salt off of them.
