    I’m not a marketeer, but I have colleagues in marketing and I like to wear different hats sometimes. For the average Joe, I think Lemmy is a bit intimidating right now. I’ve seen some good mobile apps, but on the web UI front there’s still a way to go.

    Generally, I think you want to work on two things: acquisition and retention. On the acquisition front, we probably want:

    • A user-friendly website that looks inviting and engaging
    • User-friendly mobile apps for iOS and Android
    • To make sure threads get ranked in Google to draw people in who search for specific things (Google Search Console helps)

    On the retention front, we probably want:

    • To raise awareness about the apps in the web UI so people know they can take Lemmy with them
    • To explicitly ask new users if they want to receive e-mail notifications for replies (now it’s buried somewhere in your settings)
    • To make sure the mobile app can send push notifications for replies

    I think the e-mail notifications about replies are key to get people into the habit of interacting with others on Lemmy.

    Some people are not going to like these suggestions. We don’t like to push people to do things, SEO has negative connotations, I get it. We don’t have to do all of that if we want Lemmy to be a niche thing. But if we want to vastly grow the diversity of communities, we have to put in the work to appeal to a wider audience.
