An Australian man has died after being bitten by a highly venomous snake while trying to remove the serpent from a childcare center in an effort “to keep the children safe,” local media and emergency services said Wednesday.

Paramedics in the northeastern state of Queensland were called out Tuesday afternoon and found the man in critical condition.

The man was believed to have been bitten by a brown snake, one of the most lethal species in the world. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation identified the victim as 47-year-old Jerromy Brookes.

I do kind of wonder if “protecting the children” was an active activity, or if they were already cleared out and he just figured he could handle things himself. There’s big difference in my mind between putting yourself between a pissed off snake and a bunch of kiddos, and deciding you’re a badass who will take care of a snake somebody found and get them back into a cleared-out daycare without waiting for some so-called “expert”.

Either way, RIP and sympathy for the family, but you’ve got to be responsible when there are people who care about you.
