Not good. You know you have to eat, what would happen if you just forced yourself to eat a couple crackers or something mild?
I tried last time and could barely get through half a cracker when the low level nausea suddenly becomes “DO NOT EAT ANYTHING” nausea.
I’ll survive until Monday either way.
Half a cracker is better than not eating.
I hope you get better OP. An ulcer is no joke.
Thanks. The thing is, I thought they were bacterial? But Protonix is a proton pump inhibitor. I was way too out of it when he put me on it last time (immediately after the scope) and haven’t been able to get to see him since, but they finally obviously realized it was urgent enough for an almost soon visit.
As far as I’ve heard what causes a stomach ulcer is too much acid and not enough mucus to protect the stomach lining. I have no idea about your case and I’m not a doctor, a bacteria that triggers an ulcer sounds possible but there’s lots of other potential triggers too.
In any case you really want to keep an eye on it, so it’s good that you’ve already been to a doctor. Making that first visit is always the hardest thing for me.
I have other medical issues, so I got over doctor phobias a long time ago. Now I just have the problem of misdiagnosis, which has happened to me before.
Yes, Most ulcers are bacterial. The infection isn’t localized though. So if you have an ulcer, the rest of the stomach lining will be infected, too. This will decrease the stomach’s resistance against it’s own acid while hindering the mechanisms that tell the stomach to stop producing acid, along with gases that form when the stomach didn’t digest something properly and the bacteria that infected it did that instead. All of this will increase the pressure and the vulnerability of the stomach.
By inhibiting the stomach acid production, the stomach’s skin gets a chance to heal itself. That’s why proton pump inhibitors are vital when dealing with an ulcer. Depending on the specific case, antibiotics are used in combination with proton pump inhibitors. The bacteria that causes ulcers are usually fairly easily killed with antibiotics. The fact that your symptoms worsened might tell the doctor that the dose of specific proton pump inhibitor are inadequate.
Interesting. Thanks for the information. I know very little about this area.
Try to at least get your vitamins and nutrients if you can’t eat. If you can stomach drinking, try Pedialyte
I did Ensure last time, but I don’t think I could drink it right now. Just thinking about it makes me feel worse.
I don’t know if this will be helpful, but try Pedialyte popsicles? You can make them super easily in the freezer, and they work if you can’t stomach liquids even.
That’s worth a shot. Thanks!
Constant low level nausea and low energy is how I ended up getting diagnosed with my issue and though I still struggle with not wanting to eat sometimes it has gotten so much better thankfully. I hope they figure it out and help ya OP, I know how much it sucks
I’m glad to hear it’s gotten better. And thanks.

I appreciate the empathy. What eventually happened? Did it just go away on its own and never come back?

It’s rare but you may check for gastroparesis. I have it. It comes and goes for now… it typically involves getting sick hours after eating because your stomach muscles don’t work to digest food.
It makes me nauseous and not want to eat for days.
Usually associated with diabetes or alcohol abuse. Not really associated with dry heaving though.
I’ll mention it to the doctor.
Good luck, brother
Thank you.
This is how my anxiety manifests, especially the bit about not being able to tolerate the smell of food, and it’s really terrible. I never went quite as long as you, but I did survive on a saltine a day for a couple weeks. Godspeed finding a cause, I know it’s frustrating.
I’m sorry to hear that. My daughter has major anxiety issues to the point that she was unable to cope with a small lunch party we took her to with about 10 strangers. We’re taking her to a psychiatrist soon to see if she can help with medication.
Drugs helped me a lot. I never got much out of therapy (maybe I’m the asshole, but I think most of what I’m anxious about is very reasonable), but antidepressants just make me feel more like me. The come-up can be really rough, but once they’re established you start feeling more like a person and less like a Rube Goldberg machine of sensory torture.
Well I’m glad you were able to find help. Therapy does help her, but not enough.
Have you considered that you may be turning into a vampire?
I can still see my reflection if that means anything.
Protonix doesn’t work for everyone. For me it actually made me feel worse. The only thing that fixed my ulcer was Nexium. My insurance (for whatever reason) doesn’t cover it, so I pay for it out of pocket from the Mark Cuban Cost Plus online pharmacy. It’s less than $20 for a 90 day.
I feel the same as I did a while back before I ever took Protonix, so it’s not that it made me worse, it’s that it doesn’t seem to have helped. We’ll see what he tries next.
What happens if you just force yourself to eat?
Have you tried weed?
I get too nauseated to continue after a couple of bites.
Even a couple of bites is sufficient to severely boost your energy though.
And still having “some” intake of vitamins will probably help too.
You’re clearly going trough a health crisis and getting severely weakened by not being able to eat is only going to make things progressively worse.
Oh I agree it will get worse, but that’s why I go to see a doctor in a couple of days. People have survived a lot longer than this on hunger strikes, so I think I’ll make it to Monday.
How would you describe your nausea?
Because for certain varieties of nausea, Dramamine is a cure. But you’ll be sleepy.
Then maybe try a THC patch or something, from a strain that makes people hungry.
I use cannabis for another medical reason. It doesn’t even make me hungry right now!
So glad you mentioned it. Are you smoking it? And if so, are you using it a lot?
Overuse (particularly smoking and vaping) of marijuana can totally cause symptoms that you’re experiencing. It’s called Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome, and your symptoms are not dissimilar to the prodromal phase.
For me cutting back was enough to help abate those symptoms.
Not saying this is what’s going on for you, but worth a gander!
I vaporize but I don’t feel worse when I use it and it’s not like I’m using it constantly. I have a painful nerve disorder on top of this going on and it’s one of the only things that helps when it gets bad.
Nothing to say except I hope you find relief, you’ve become a recognizable account for me here on lemmybin and I enjoy your comments!
Thanks very much, I really appreciate that!
Have you considered psychological factors? It sounds a bit emotionally charged how you talk about food. Could be an eating disorder maybe? That’s usually about the topic of control. Did you have any life events that coincide with these phases where you can’t eat? Just an idea that you can entertain in parallel to the doctors treatment.
Sorry. This is unfortunately not fitting content for here. You are not gonna to get useful information here. Just not the place for it.
