Plumbing and electricity were always easy for me, but if you fail, you’ll pay much more to fix consequences.

I had someone walk me through simple things like changing out light switches or light fixtures, but I won’t go beyond that. That still even makes me nervous sometimes.

    My first post on Lemmy!

Anything to do with garage doors, except for painting and oiling. Garage door springs are not something to mess around with. When the door is closed, the springs have an enormous amount of energy stored and can send metal shards easily through walls and people.

I will do electrical, plumbing, drywall (I hate mudding), framing, you name it. I will NOT mess with garage door springs.

Any plumbing involving drains. It doesn’t seem like it should be any harder than other plumbing, but there are a lot of little details that can lead to rather unfortunate situations if they’re not right.

Roof painting. I’m up for trying anything once, but after (trying to) paint my roof, I’ll never do it again.

Pressure cleaned the roof. No probs.

Early mornings were too damp to paint. After mid morning, the roof was too hot to paint. Late afternoon seemed to be the only time that wasn’t dewy or too hot, so went for that time of day.

Applied the undercoat. Mostly OK except for the paint that got spilled on the driveway.

Started applying the top coat. Stepped on a wet bit and slid down the freshly painted roof wondering if I was going to fall off. I was using a rope and harness, but in some spots it doesn’t stop you falling off, it just stops you from hitting the ground. Caught myself on a screw just before my feet went over the gutter. Fixed up the messed up bit of the roof. Finished the job. Went inside and had a shower to get all of the brown paint off.

Came out in the morning to find that overnight dew had sent $600 worth of topcoat into my gutters and the roof was white again.

Called a painter to finish the job.

No, corrugated steel roof. Once the old paint fails the rain starts to eat away the zinc coating and eventually the steel underneath starts to rust. Best to repaint before that happens. Also, it’s more aesthetic. 🙂

Gutters. Not that it can’t be DYI, more that you get a much better result when you have the seamless gutter rig to spit out custom made sections on-site.
