I grew up calling it both
I think cookout is much more specific.
Barbecue has all these meanings:
- an event where you eat BBQ
- a cuisine centered on grilled meats
- the grill itself
A cookout is #1 specifically, and usually multi family or large group. Grilling some chicken for you and the kids isn’t a cookout. But it is barbecue.
