Use a browser ffs. I genuinely don’t understand why people are so obsessed with using a specific app for each website. If the reddit app is bad you can use Chrome. Or Safari, or Brave, or Samsung Browser, or Opera.

    Reddit is a website.

It’s not just a website though. There’s an api and a database and a company and a community. I’d rather call it a platform.

Grow the fuck up. You know very well what I mean. The end user interface is a website, and does not require a special app to be accessed.

But it isn’t. The end user interface is also the mobile app and it used to also be third party apps. They are all interfaces that work on the same platform (or “shitshow” as user mojofrodojo pointed out). Even curl can be an interface for Reddit, technically speaking, but I don’t know if they allow that.

Fine. If it helps you manage your issues, you can call it a platform. That doesn’t change the fact that there is absolutely no need to use an app to access it, and then moan about how bad that app is.

No there is no need. If that’s your whole point, than I agree with that. Mobile users expect an app though. The web interface on mobile isn’t optimal compared to what a dedicated app could offer. People know how good it could be, they’ve experienced how good it could be, but they feel like the decision to make the app like it is, is screwing their user experience and they’re salty about it.

It’s like when your company car used to be a Ferrari, but management wants to make more profit, so they’ve exchanged it for a Honda. Your point would be that you can just forfeit the lease car in favor of extra salary and lease your own Ferrari and that’s a fair point, but that doesn’t deal with the fact that you feel like management screwed you over and you have to take car of all the paperwork too and private lease probably also influences your credit score.

Can’t properly access nsfw with the browser unless you go to old.reddit.com which is a bit bad on mobile and might be shut down eventually.

They know how to target their core audience. Bet you this is the issue here, too

I use that too but it hasn’t been working too well for me recently. For example, sometimes it can’t play videos and when I try opening that video in a browser the pricks over at Reddit fucking blocks VPN.

I have a few communities that I lurk in as well and I use a clean RSS feed app to subscribe to sub’s old.reddit RSS feed.

I use the app NetNewsWire on iOS which is free and clean. If you then want to follow technology subreddit you add the feed https://old.reddit.com/r/technology/.rss into the app.

Hope that helps some fellow lurkers out there.

I do the same. I use FeedBro (a Firefox add-in) on the pc and Feeder on Android.

Just a reminder for those wanting the niche communities of Reddit. Create them here. If you manage to bring just one more user besides yourself you already have a community. After that, it’s just a matter of time for it to grow, provided you keep it active

Shout out to my one other anonymous subscriber!

I hear you, but unfortunately I have not enough experience nor time to moderate the niche communities I loved on Reddit.

You might say this is selfish because I’d leave this to others, as if their time is less valuable, but really you need to be capable of being a moderator and I’m really grateful to those who do so. You also need to be an expert (or knowledgeable enough) in the topic being moderated.

While I was on Reddit my main account had a single comment in 12 years of having accounts (and even more without): it was a request to get a Tildes account in June 2023, then I found out about Lemmy and here I am (and here I’m way more active than I’ve ever been because I feel Lemmy is small and needs active users and I enjoy being here a lot more)

It doesn’t actually need that much moderation. I moderate a pretty sizeable community and mod log is pretty empty. You don’t need to be an expert neither. These are excuses, not reasons.

If you see regular active trusted people, reach out to them about modding when it grows.

I know, but the thing is I lack the experience and time needed to create and moderate a community. I can only engage with content (i.e posting and commenting)

That is why they are called niche: they aren’t for everyone. Also…

Care what other people think and you will always be their prisoner.

There are a few niche communities I also keep up with since they didn’t really express the desire to move elsewhere.

I’ve been viewing them with old.reddit.com without logging in.

I don’t check Reddit much, but I have been using Dystopia lately if I need to check a niche community. I have a different VPN so no idea if browsing Reddit through that app works with Mullvad, but it does let me browse without an account.

I recentlly went back to reddit and I was struck by how much the algorithm catered to my communities. no way that is conducive to balanced thought .
