You should move to Reddthat, they disabled downvotes
If someone is seriously a supremacist about using darkmode I think their input is invalid enough to be discarded.
On the other hand I don’t think downvoting someone you disagree with on anything is in itself toxic, but going out of your way to downvote someone over something this - let’s be honest - unimportant is sort of stupid.
EDIT: To be clear I’m saying darkmode is unimportant not the issue of people being toxic.
If an upvote is an “I like this” button, then it’s bad UX design to expect people to not use the downvote as an “I don’t like this button.” If there needs to be an “off topic” button then it shouldn’t be styled and placed to look like the exact opposite of the “I like this” button.
But an upvote doesn’t mean “I like this”. It means you judge the post/comment to be high quality. There’s a correlation for sure, but quality is a holistic judgement based on context. It measured by the same spectrums as downvoting: to what extent is the post/comment relevant, original, funny, entertaining, informative, rule-abiding, respectful, etc. We don’t need separate buttons for all of these, the voting buttons just wear many hats. You’re generally going to think more highly of stuff you agree with or that makes you happy, but accurate bad news and unpopular opinions can still succeed score-wise despite these disadvantages.

but the “downvote” button should not be a “disagree” button.
But it is. Always has been, always will be.
At this point I find people complaining about downvotes much more annoying than the downvotes themselves.
Especially on Lemmy, which does not have karma BS.
The original “upvote/downvote” paradigm was not about likes, but about whether the post contributes to discussion. But people figured out quite fast that downvoting is effective way to cancel other people opinion. Fediverse attempts to fix it by adding “boost”.
This is a pointless topic, and Lemmy is no stranger to people downvoting unpopular things since even being here means we are relatively strong in our beliefs.
Score doesn’t matter anyway. Take it in stride. If you see excessive toxicity, spam, flamebait, other reprehensible content, please report it rather than just downvoting.
If you mention downvoting there’s a good chance downvotes appear, just fyi.
I’m curious if the trend will flip again at some point. I definitely find dark mode to be easier on my eyes for a lot of stuff, especially coding. But I don’t rage when it’s not available.
I’m old enough to remember dark mode being the default because of monochrome monitors. And then later, people were ecstatic about the faux-paper-on-the-screen concept, and dark scrrens were very passe for a period.
Wouldn’t shock me if some future monitor tech that looks more like paper and ink flipped the preference/fashion again back to light mode.
When I use Obsidian, for example, I tend to like themes that look like papyrus or sepia type tones. Not too bright or too dark. Just kind of relaxing, to my eyes anyway.
For me it’s very much dependent on the topic at hand.
Coding, kbin, email, calendar, dark.
Still gotta work in light mode on word… just looks wrong otherwise.
I swear I’m the only one who can’t do dark mode anything. it genuinely bugs my eyes and I start seeing what can only be described as burn-in if I use dark mode for more than a could minutes.
Downvoters are stupid
[Posts screenshot showing you downvoted people]
I’ll be the first to agree that up/down votes should be replaced with something more functional, but if the current meta is “This is relevant or not” and the OP was unrelated to light/dark mode preferences, then… yeah, downvote. Off topic, doesn’t contribute, randomizes the conversation, doesn’t belong.
That has never once worked. Nowhere. Ever.
what
Says the person using light mode!!
(On a serious note, upvotes and downvotes mean different things to different people. That’s just their own opinion and that’s okay. But if you are bothered by downvotes I would use a Lemmy instance that hides the downvotes entirely.)
