… Google products, such as Google Ads, …
Really? Just deactivate all my accounts then :O
They are talking about if you are running ads using their platform, not specifically targeting
They better start figuring out how to merge old accounts into the new ones then. There is about to be a shitton of email undelivered that was forwarded from old addresses to new addresses…
Oh you better believe…they won’t
More importantly, there is a lot of paid content on older playstore accounts that will require merging with new accounts. There is a lot of us that have been around since gmail was invite-only and made some questionable account names that were later required to be more professional. There was no option to change existing addresses - so new ones were created. Now we have to log into all accounts on our phones to access that content.
Yes. I had one with my name before I married. And now of course with my married name. This has been my primary account on my phone even though I’ve been married for 10years now. I have tons of apps and stuff one the old account.

Hm so it will delete the YouTube videos too? I have an account where I backed upp my dads home videos from the 90ies. I started mooving it to peertube but it’s not done yet.
You likely have time but moving to PeerTube is wise.
Ok, I started the channel synchronization now so it should import the whole thing over time.
If peertube like Lemmy, you can lost your videos in a month even be “active”.
As far as I see, it is enough to open Gmail once a year to stay active.
Yeah, but I will forget about it, normally I don’t open it and then suddenly all the videos are gone.
Add the account to your phone or other device?
I just don’t use google services other than YouTube and if it’s not automated then it’s easily forgotten for 2 years.
Instead of posting here how bad you’ve got it that evil Google might delete your inactive account you could’ve already set a yearly reminder in the calendar or reminder app you’re using to just log into YT and keep your content.
I never said that Google was evil for doing that. And I already set up the process to move my videos off Googles servers so that they can delete it. Jeesus Christ some people …
Set up a yearly reminder in calendar app of your choice?
I think it’s better to move my content off their servers so that they can get back the 10 GB server space for which I never paid.
IIRC when I first heard about this, it was clarified by Google that any accounts with YouTube videos on them will not be deleted. Can’t risk deleting abandoned channels that are still bringing in views.
Ah interesting.
Would it not be wise to back up to more modern physical media as well, i.e. an external hard drive or at least a USB drive or heck, even a folder on your computer? I would never ever trust any cloud-or-internet based service with being the sole backup for anything of personal value.
It’s still on a hard drive on my dads computer but it’s more difficult to access there. And my peertube has also the normal server backup. But now that you say that, I should back up those videos on the Synology too.
I have 10 google accounts, maybe more🥲
y
Same, but tbh if you haven’t touched one of your accounts in >2 years then you’re probably fine to just make a new account next time you need it.
I’m going to go and be active in all mine because occasionally I stumble on some thing or other where my password reset goes to some old account.
I don’t want to get locked out over no longer having access to the associated email, has happened to me before and it was annoying
Seems like they’ve run out of hard drives. Soon, they’ll be like twitch and delete your videos unless you’re a partner.
Or maybe this is another trick to make us believe they’ve deleted our data.
Na, there really have been issues lately where the sheer mass of data accumulated is adding up to some pretty massive bills for the data giants like Google. I think they just realised that a lot of dead accounts are giving them no value whatsoever, and so many of them have piled up that deleting them probably saves them a nice pile of money in infrastructure costs.
Good. I wish more companies did this. I have multiple accounts strewn around the internet I haven’t used in ages that I just abandoned because it was easier than trying to get them deleted.
So if it is deleted, it can’t be used again right?
