Censorship on Reddit is out of control. I just got perma banned on r/movies for using the word wokeness.

My post wasn’t controversial or anything, it doesn’t even have a negative rating. So they are just policing language… it’s ridiculous.

It’s been like that for a long time in the popular subs. You can be extremely respectful and everything. Disagree with the hivemind, you get shadowbanned or banned.

Even on Lemmy there’s a hard left slant. And not the fun progressives who just want to be free to believe what they believe alongside everyone else. The hardliners who don’t even look at you as a human being unless you believe what they believe. They’re the left wing equivalent of the fundamentalist religious folks on the right, but dare I say even more zealous in their belief that they follow the one true and perfect moral doctrine.

I grew up on the right. That pattern of intolerance is exactly why I course corrected into a left winger in my young adulthood. The left has become the same thing. They justify it as “intolerance to intolerance”, but spend some time talking to them and you quickly realize it’s the same old tribalism. They are intolerant of even the most basic and respectful disagreements. They can’t even entertain the idea that they might be slightly wrong. That’s how you know it’s ideology, not an ongoing rational discourse.

When you think you have escaped ideology, you are under the effects of ideology. Think of it as a glass lens that you wear in order to make sense of the world. You think you can just take it off and see the “real world” but when you take off the glasses you don’t see anything anymore. All stimulus breaks down into meaninglessness. You need that lens in order to perceive and interact with the world.

I’m a leftist but I strongly believe in freedom of speech so I welcome all right wingers onto this platform. We can talk to each other and discuss and as long as people are being genuine in their attempt to make sense of things I think that’s totally fine.

Although I 100% agree with you we are seeing the same neoliberal “left” which is really just a center right ideology (we drop bombs on you but the plane has a trans flag on it) that is so prevalent on reddit. There’s a popular “politics” community that’s starting to look identical to /r/politics

I’m starting to start either a) I’m a schizo or b) astroturfers have already caught on to this place

I’m not even conservative, just not liberal… however I wouldn’t be caught dead watching MSNBC

The people on the right don’t go around telling people what they can or can’t say. The people on the left try to cancel everyone. Take away people’s livelihoods for very minor things that usually most people don’t even think are bad or are at most in bad taste, and they don’t mind taking things out of context either for the accusations. And the media prefers to take things out of context.

It’s going to suck when youtube starts censoring everything more than it is already.

Oh yeah you’re right about them not being able to think they could be wrong. That’s why the trans in sports thing can’t be conceded by them. Everyone with more than 2 brain cells knows it is unfair but if someone admits it is they think their arguments about everything else will collapse.

I also notice that people on the left cannot debate… they simply devolve into personal accusations or imply things about the other person or hear one thing then extrapolate in a sinister direction and claim that is what the other person said and believes.

reality today is like one of those weird future alternate reality TV show episodes.

Imagine 15 years ago saying what the issues would be in 2023 and how people and corporations and universities behave using a list of how they actually behave now, and people would have thought you’re either crazy or a comedian.

I agree with the point that people can be rabid about their belief in hard left ideals. Isn’t that like trying to terrorize people into a subscribed ideology? There’s a word for that.

I mean I think it’s fine for people to have differing opinions about social issues, but when they try to hurt people in any way they can because they don’t agree, that’s just wrong. My position on an issue can be changed through an intelligent argument, but attacking me is going to make me dig hooves into the turf.

I don’t think I’d say hard left, but probably left to some extent.

I’m actually kind of odd in that I can be hard left on some issues and hard right on others. In any case, when I make right hand comments they seem to be tolerated here. The hard left stuff I don’t agree with I just gloss over, I’m good.

    Stop 👏 using 👏 Reddit 👏

Any action there, no matter how vindictive, will raise the traffic scores and help then in their IPO. The best way to win is to not play.

I keep seeing people talking about how this is to boost numbers and it’s direct relationship to their IPO. This seems simplistic and probably not entirely correct. I’m not going to pretend to understand the finer points of an initial public offering (there seems to be enough people pretending already) but I doubt there will be any one-to-one direct correlation between placing a pixel and putting one more penny in scrooge mcducks dragon hoard. Like, as if spez is saving up for a new bike, and if I don’t look at r/place today he’ll be a few cents short and I can twirl my mustache and villain laugh while a single tear rolls down his cheek.

Honestly boycotting or participating in protesting on reddit are likely equally futile from a change the world standpoint. Reddit is a building marked for demolition. It will be blown up and a big apartment building with no parking, a partial view, and moderate to high rent is going to be constructed in it’s place. The value of the real estate is the neighborhood, it doesn’t matter what furniture is currently in the building or what you wrote about the upcoming demolition in your letter to the editor. It’s getting torn down and rebuilt no matter what, and the people involved will be marginally richer than they already are. But it’s natural and honest to be upset and I support people expressing themselves however they see fit.

It indicates an ability for the site to attract eyeballs on demand. /r/place started as an experiment, it’s now just a gimmick reddit can pull out at any time to attract traffic. Being able to pull engagement like that is valuable to advertisers and therefore make the site more valuable overall.

But more importantly, I think you’re right in assuming any of us individuals using Reddit right now isn’t swinging any pendulums. That said, the overall point is everything spez is doing right now is about demonstrating Reddit’s value, the potential profit to be made, and its reach. The more people interact with the platform right now, the more active it appears, the more the protests seem irrelevant. “See? No one left. We’re as strong as ever.”

Granted, it’s probably true that reddit’s traffic is not much lower than it was, it’s just not getting the API calls anymore, but those weren’t valuable to them anyway. But at the same time, Reddit’s recent moves clearly indicate they need to keep engagement up right now. It’s all about appearances. Investors and advertisers are likely side eyeing spez a lot after the last few months and they need reassurances the site is OK. Tanking these efforts by users trolling /r/place proves that it isn’t.

Yep. Imagine future r/place but instead of blank it starts pre-filled with a huge Nike swoosh, or some other branding. Then The Verge makes an article about it, it then fills Lemmy’s front page with screenshots. People write fuck Spez (which if you do t know who he is means nothing) and Reddit traffic gets a boost, because they choose so. Now this is a huge argument for advertisers.

Boycotting isn’t about changing the world, we all know that a couple thousand people choosing to not participate is a drop in the bucket that wont really change much in the short term.

        Its not about that.

Its about putting your foot on the ground and making a personal commited choice to say ‘No.’ To not tolerate being censored and treated like stupid animals by soulless megacorps who just want to squeeze you dry.

Its about setting boundaries for yourself and what you are willing to take from who/what. Its about truly commuting to not being a mindless consumer bitch boy driven by popular trends.

My choice to delete my reddit accounts and not come crawling back to daddy spez isn’t much on its own, but its not nothing either. If enough people put their foot down and make a true effort to say no, it might just mean something in the end. Even if it doesn’t change anything in the long term, it has a personal affect on me, I know that I am strong enough to say ‘no’ and mean it indefinitely That is the true spirit of a protest.

It shows that they can control traffic by simply creating an event. It shows that they can still control their user base. It also shows that the issue is solely directed at Spez. I bet you’ll see him step down around the IPO (with a nice goodbye bonus) that’s my theory.

Spez is definitely preparing to cash out, there’s no question. Stockholders will likely not want him as CEO at this point. He’s only interested in the sale, not the site anymore.

But to your point, if this is true, then engagement on Reddit right now doesn’t matter much. At this point, there’s nothing users can do to change what happens next. Either Reddit is sold for dollars or pennies, but it will be sold, and Spez will immediately disappear.

We have no control, here. That’s been obvious for years, frankly, but painfully so the last few months. We only had control with admins that actually cared about the long term health of the site, but that time is past. Only thing we can do is keep chugging on here and enjoy the fireworks over there.

The analogy a bit exaggerated, but the point is: Reddit exists and whether you like it or not, and they are still one of the top social websites. Big social websites have a lot of influence on people, and it’s important to watch out on important events. Facebook and Twitter are websites I’ve never used, and probably will never use in the future. But it’s still important to know what’s going on. Social platforms are a breeding ground for extremist ideologies, especially when they are undermoderated, and can become a powerful tool of corporate propaganda when overmoderated and dissenting opinions censored. In the 2016 election, the US Presidential election might have been influenced by Facebook’s and Cambridge Analytica’s data harvest and analysis, which was used for targeted political ads and influence public opinion.

Ignoring a platform doesn’t make it go away, but using Lemmy as a platform to try organize and attempt to convince people to leave reddit can make reddit slowly die.
