This article is dumb. It grasps at straws and seems to completely overlook the fact that union contracts have to be voted on by their members. If the tank and file aren’t happy with this deal, it won’t pass.

“Only an 18%” raise over four years is 4.5% per year. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t keep up with inflation, that’s still a hell of a guarantee. Very few raises are keeping up with inflation, mine included.

It also complains about $23 for part timers and seems to suggest it’s not enough to make ends meet…of course it isn’t. It’s a part time job. $23 is $8 above minimum wage, like what is this trash?

As someone who, due to his job, will have to deal with a bunch of angry customer bullshit if it happened, I also hope they strike anyway. Because it would be worth it for them to get what they deserve.

I wish Republicans would understand (or care) that sometimes we have to sacrifice things ourselves in order to make sure other people aren’t suffering.

I’m confused what Republicans have to do with this point at all? That sorta came out of nowhere and doesnt pertain to anything stated in the article. In fact the article actually references Biden shutting down the railroad strike (I dont remember him being republican?).

Nobody is in government is here for you, regardless of the side. I don’t get why people politicize the shit out of literally everything or make it partisan.

The classic saying goes, “How do you know a politician is lying?”

        “Their lips are moving.”

In general they want people fighting about party lines and what they make to be partisan politics. Why feed in?

My first reaction when everyone started trumpeting about the deal was “if the deal is that good, it wouldn’t need all this spin”.

I see that I was right.

Yeah. I admit, I didn’t look closely, and didn’t realize it was all spin from union brass. It sounded like a labour win. Maybe I was just too excited to hear of it.

This is unfortunate. Hopefully the employees balk at the contract and hit the streets. I’m sure the bluster was coming in the face of the threat of back-to-work orders from government, but if levied, the striking workers need to stand up to government.

Not that I expect that they will. If it’s anything like here, they’ll be back to work within hours of BtW legislation/exec orders.

Honestly, my initial knee jerk reaction was roughly the same… but then my skeptical nature took over :P

At this point, I’m just convinced that labor won’t actually be taken seriously in the US until and unless one or more major”economic pillar” unions (e.g. teamsters - best of luck to the writers and actors guilds, but they’re not immediately crucial to our economic system, to be blunt) go on an extended nationwide strike, with all that that entails.

This article seems to suggest if you only work 3 hours a day your wages should be increased so you can support yourself with one part time job.

Honestly? 3 hours a day at any job should be enough for you to afford housing and food for yourself alone.

Also, fuck those hours, what job does UPS have that only requires 3 hours a day? The only reason they do that is because it’s cheaper to pay 2-3 people the part time pay and benefits than it is to take on a single full-time employee. Instead of hiring 2-3 part timers, and then making all those people also have 2-3 jobs, just fucking pay one person full time. Why does the cruelty have to be baked in? They’re not really making THAT much more profit. Fucking greedy and quality suffers for it.

The real issue with part-time work is to keep people from the other benefits of full-time employment. The article states that moving from part-time to full-time takes 20 years. Part-time jobs are a way to keep UPS from having to provide full-time benefits.

Same shit as the last two negotiations I was in, the last one even leading to a strike that resulted in a worse offer that people voted in favor of!
