One of the more mischievous kids in my third grade class was the son of the high school chem teacher. He purchased a chemistry set at the book fair that year. He and another kid took it into the bathroom by the cafeteria and drank a few “experiments” from the kit in the box. They both got violently sick and an ambulance came. I’m really glad I stuck with my Box Car Children collection and Calvin and Hobbes book mark that year.

Indeed. It has a lot to do with that and about a dozen other things. Degree. Job field. Connections. Experience. Personality.

I have a general comms degree and an MA in digital media. These degrees and my job field are extremely broad, so I have experience in loads of different things. As such, I can apply for any job from digital marketing to public relations to a press officer and have a shot of at least getting an interview. I’ve never had a shortage of knowing people in my industry who would be willing to write me a letter of recommendation or give me a referral where they work. I’ve gotten one of my colleagues hired at two separate places that I have been a manager.

But to add on to that, I interview well and have a very relaxed and jovial personality. I work well with others and make friends easily. I can’t count how many times there have been interoffice issues where an independent consultant had to come in and mediate or get to the bottom of an HR problem and it would turn out that I’m one of the only people in a division that not a single person had a conflict with.

Not to derail your point, but I am 100% positive that the meme isn’t saying Barbie is a bad movie at all. This meme isn’t near as deep as you’re giving it credit for.

It’s making the observation that Hollywood has eroded its creative foundation to the point that there have only been two movies that anyone is talking about this year. Whereas in years past there would be dozens.

I have certainly noticed that over the last few years I care less and less about yet another Marvel movie or remake of an awesome 80s or 90s movie. It’s extremely obvious why masterful productions like Barbie and Oppenheimer stand out above everything else this year. These would have been great movies in the 90s too, but they would have actually been competing against substantially more films that are worth talking about.

People that keep making this dumbass “engagement” claim have no goddamn idea what they’re talking about. Nobody is falling for jack shit. The “engagement” of people going on to place to troll is miniscule. Like you said, half of us aren’t looking at this on Reddit. It’s being broadcast everywhere else and the tech outlets that an investor will see are reading about how much the user base fucking hates the product.

People in the Reddit top decided that they would run places again off-schedule. Best guess is someone thought that it would be good marketing for the coming IPO to show that Reddit is still functional with lively communities.

Any idiot could have seen what would actually happen coming a mile away. The only people who participated in r/place before are people who are now completely anti-reddit at the most and royally pissed at the admins at the least.

Still kicking but…somehow not the same. It’s something I can’t quite explain. There’s just something different about it now. I had to look something up on Reddit a couple of days ago. It was the first time I’d been back since they killed all the third party apps. It reminded me of going back to a city I used to live but my friends were all gone and my favorite places to go had changed. So, while it was the same place, and there were plenty of people around, it seemed exhausted and forced.

They’re not. They’re responding to your first idiotic comment with a rational one.

The guy that is one of the main creators of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, made Bluesky. It’s a Twitter alternative that I believe is still invite only. It’s funny, when Bluesky officially started allowing people to use it, Twitter was abuzz with excitement and people posting memes about begging for access. Those select few that did get in early were going on and on about how awesome it is and how it was like old Twitter.

Then Threads drops without the invite barrier automatically adding everyone with an Instagram account and I haven’t heard a fuckin peep about Bluesky in weeks.

That’s how they got me as well. Lowest priced plus on sale. Reviews were mostly fine for the trimmer itself. Most people seemed to have more issues with the customer service, which, that’s pretty standard for many companies these days. I was tired of constantly having to fix the name brand gas weed eater I had, so I picked up one of the battery powered Ryobi models. It works…fine lol. Battery could last longer. Otherwise it does exactly what it says it does on the box. I’ve never had a problem with it. My other handful of Ryobi tools are in that camp. Kinda cheap feeling but seem to work as advertised.

The only one that was shit is the drill. I have a low-end black and decker drill that has lasted me about ten years. The Ryobi I got maybe hit three.

I’ll tell you though, the best tool I own is my Scott manual push mower. Picked it up for $99 and I’ve never had an issues and it still cuts like it did when I bought it four years ago. A little WD40 in the spring after pulling it out of shed hibernation and off to cut.

This is extremely interesting. So many products that I’ve never heard of and many of them were actually around for 6-12 years before being axed or coming up on death soon. A lot of these I had heard of and even used occasionally over the years and I didn’t realize were gone now.

Agreed. Sorting by top 6 1/2 hours works very well for me.

I shit you not, this is uncomfortably accurate. I was living it up, having finally tossed Reddit and also called it done with Twitter. Loving this space. Loving the vibe. And then all this Threads shit just becomes everything and I really do feel like this meme.

Are you fucking serious? Do you genuinely not know who Chaya Raichik is? Because if you’re acting in good faith and actually aren’t aware of the vile hatred and harassment orchestrated at her hands, you really need to drop her name in the old Google machine and do some reading.

Look up whathowwhy on YouTube. He’s a dude from the UK who puts stuff into epoxy. A few years a go he put a hotdog into a cube of epoxy and would do periodic video updates on the hotdog. One year I actually watched the New Years Eve livestream of the hotdog slowly spinning on a dias. He’d put a little party hat on it and the live chat was absolutely hilarious.

Ya. That is a large part (not the only reason) of why Huffman gambled and lost on killing 3rd party apps. People using Apollo, or any other app that wasn’t the trash official app, weren’t getting ads at all or were giving their ad dollars to a third party. By killing third party apps, that forces anyone who actually wants to use Reddit to use the official suck ass app or the garbage desktop site which also had alt options that used the API. When users are funneled into only using official Reddit products, that means they’re only consuming ads that Reddit makes a profit from.

I used Bacon Reader for almost ten years. It didn’t have ads for half a decade and when ads did come, it was a non intrusive banner ad at the bottom. The Reddit app is riddled with obstructive ads. So is the website unless using an ad blocker. Reddit when used the way the admins want, is just one ass blast of shitty ads.
