I also am amazed that IBM branded a whole product line as “SurePOS”.

PoS is a really common abbreviation for Point of Sale hardware and software.
This is partly because there is no such thing as a non-POS point of sale system.
The people who picked Point Of Sale as the term for these systems knew exactly what was going to happen. I cannot be convinced otherwise.
Back in my day we called it a cash register, so I can’t disagree.
