    Omegas of old were like Timex watches today. They were built for function and dependability with very little to no luxury. Think BTL (built to last) over anything else.

    That said, the people who laid rails barely had enough for the essentials, including literacy. I seriously doubt they bought timepieces, but the office workers commuting to the city by rail probably did. That’s such an absurd take by the OP.
