One of the big things that Israel needs to stop for peace that is problematic on their end.
And that the international community turns a blind eye to. What are we waiting to ask Israel to remove the illegal settlers? Nobody will, because everybody wants to be in good terms with Israel. That’s the sad truth.
The United states has for years. They said no and we left it at that.
“no” sounds like a solid stance then I guess. These settlements are considered illegal under international law, as they violate the Fourth Geneva Convention. That law which prohibits an occupying power from transferring its civilian population into the territory it occupies. The United States and have expressed concerns, mostly just concerns, the United Nations have passed several resolutions reaffirming their position, mostly in condemnation, but overall the stance from the US has been more lenient towards Israel’s settlement policies.
It certainly seems that these days there is a trend of not acknowledging human rights abuses anymore, it could be seen as late stage capitalism mixed with a deadly cocktail of politics/religion perhaps. This apathy from the west, will not serve humanity well in my opinion.
That’s incredibly depressing.
I’m pro-Israel but they shouldn’t be building settlements on the occupied land.
It should be if they build settlements, we cut all funding. Period.
The settlements go against any accord or treaty signed previously in search of peace in the region. But with Netanyahu governing Israel, I don’t see them stopping anytime soon.
In my humble opinion, as long as terrorist attacks from Hamas and illegal settlements from Israeli settlers keep occurring, peace in the region is impossible.
The settlements also against the reason for keeping the land. The land was meant as a buffer to avoid invasions.
If you move people in. You’ve lost that buffer.
And of course now you need a new buffer… but it wouldn’t harm anyone to move some people there, they’ll just need a little more buffer.
I mean, we sort of set up this fuck-fest despite Britain telling us it was a bad idea. But we were the Victors of the World™ so clearly we knew what we were doing (clears throat). Kind of like our useless embargo of Cuba, we made a decision and we’re sticking with it, no matter how stupid or counterproductive it is, and there’s a very vocal portion of the electorate which supports the move (mostly out of spite, which makes them that much more intractable).
Is the current war terrible? Sure. Nobody should be killing civilians or taking the hostage. Is the plight of the Palestinians real? Yeah, it is. Israel has been an absolute menace, because they can.
The embargo on Cuba is stupid at this point. It is more symbolic than anything. I have been to Cuba and it’s exactly what you’d expect a communist country to look like. Everyone is poor, and starving and the police/military are everywhere.
The situation needs to be dealt with once and for all. Either merge the land into Israel and merge the Palestinians in or give them their own country.
This current 'buffer" just doesn’t work anymore. The settlers should be booted out and we should refuse aid until they do.
I am pro-israel but they need to follow the rules like everyone else.
Very short description: Israel and the West Bank (Palestine) agree on borders. Then Israel starts to build settlements (basically residential areas) for israeilis within the Palestinian territory.
And kicking residents out to make those areas, right?
I believe that has happened, yes.
Here is an alternative Piped link(s):
dude from New York who stole a Palestinian woman’s house?
This one is about Jerusalem, but it’s still relevant.

Two neighbors are arguing about their property line.
They have a hundred foot strip of land that is ten feet wide in dispute
They have an ugly fight about it all. One neighbor is super rich and the other neighbor is barely able to keep the lights on.
The rich neighbor agrees to leave the land alone while it’s in the courts … but also decides to invite his friends over to park their really expensive RVs on the hundred foot strip of land.
Everyone wonders why the poor neighbor is angry about it.
More like a landowner living in their home, and a rich squatter parking their RV on the other guy’s backyard then slowly taking over the house.
These “neighbors” metaphors ignore the historical fact that Israel was given Palestinian land and then encroached further beyond their borders.
The neighbors fact is historically relevant, Jews have been living on that land for thousands of years https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_diaspora
The rich neighbor also controls the water, food, and power going into that strip of land, and use that as leverage against the people who actually live there. Also, the people that live on that strip of land aren’t allowed to leave it, or they won’t be able to get back in. Also the rich neighbor likes to shoot the children and old women who live on that little strip of land.
Oh, and the rich neighbor “gifted” this land to the people who live on it after stealing the land they used to live on.
The rich neighbor also controls the water, food, and power going into that strip of land, and use that as leverage against the people who actually live there.
Well that seems like an opportunity for improvement. Disconnect Israeli power, food, and water supplies and connect Palestinian power, food, and water. Would be a good use of humanitarian funds.
And blown up six hours after it was built.
The infrastructure would have to go through Israel. Good luck on getting that to happen.
Always love these hot takes. Like the Palestinians never thought about resource independence from Israel until Joe Internet came along.
Spoiler: Israel targets infrastructure in bombing raids. That includes desalination plants and power infrastructure.
Even if Gaza could somehow achieve energy independence through, say, cold fusion, Israel would never allow it because it removes one important lever of control.
They tryin to do a PR name change? Its the Zionism movement, its religiously motivated military invasion.
