This is the best summary I could come up with:
Bangladesh was expected to take over but late in the process, Saudi Arabia stepped in and lobbied for the chair, in what is widely seen as an attempt to burnish the kingdom’s image.
Sherine Tadros, the head of the New York office of Amnesty International, pointed out that Saudi Arabia will be in the chair next year, on the 30th anniversary of the Beijing declaration, a landmark blueprint for advancing women’s rights globally.
“Whoever is in the chair, which is now Saudi Arabia, is in a key position to influence the planning, the decisions, the taking stock, and looking ahead, in a critical year for the commission,” Tadros said.
Refusal to have sex with her husband, live in the marital home or travel with him without a “legitimate excuse” can also justify the withdrawal of financial support under the law.
Amnesty International said a leaked draft of a forthcoming new penal code “fails to protect women and girls from all forms of gender-based violence”.
Charbonneau said HRW tried to lobby other countries among the current 45 CSW members, which include states with much better records on women’s rights like the Netherlands, Japan, Portugal and Switzerland.
The original article contains 679 words, the summary contains 195 words. Saved 71%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!
WTF is even happening anymore
I’m ready to Revolute. Let’s get a sign up sheet started
We will meet at Area 51
And we will know them by their Naruto run
Can we start to call out how corrupt the UN has become? China, Russia, Saudi Arabia have started to dominate the UN while doing stuff like this and vetoing things that affect their long term goals, like stuff that benefits human rights, while all having abysmal human rights abuse records.
It doesn’t seem like corruption; the man just ran unopposed. He was probably just as surprised at the outcome as we are.

Not to sound like a tankie (I hate the US and Russia equally, and China only slightly less), but isn’t that what the West has been doing since forever?
Not to sound like a tankie (I hate the US and Russia equally, and China only slightly less), but isn’t that what the West has been doing since forever?
Sure but firstly this hits a bit different when Russia, China, SA, and their buddies have an abhorrent record of human rights abuses in the modern era, the US has historically been bad, but no worse than their peers. So to avoid getting into whataboutism sure the US protects their interests, but outside of when someone like Trump and the MAGAs controls, the US generally sides with human rights, religious freedom, and equal rights, things may not always work out how we hoped they would but at least we’re trying to help stabilize the world.
The main point you should understand is that this isn’t a Russia, China, US, SA, Israel, whatever, problem, this is a Far Right vs everyone else problem. The Far Right is nationalism, monarchies, tyranny, fascism, religious fundamentalism, we see leaders like Netanyahu, Putin, Trump, Erdogan, Modi, Xi, Orban, Khomeini, the SA Qatari and UAE rulers, and others all coordinating with the same people, outlawing the same things, they breed corruption, and their interests aren’t legitimate because they operate as kings/mafia bosses, these are the people making minorities unsafe, through demonization and persecution, they threaten freedom of speech mostly because they don’t want to be exposed and be criticized, and they all have a “religion” they want to force on us, religion is in quotations because China and Xi force communism as a religion sure it’s under the guise of atheism but to them Mao was Jesus and the teachings of communism is their Bible.
To go further into it, you can trace the money supporting the worst people in the world back to a few Western billionaires, their Eastern counterparts, and a few specific countries, like Russia, Iran, China, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, and Israel. Just look at how China, Qatar, and the Saudis have financially backed Elon Musk, Trump, and many similar people.
Obviously I’m not trying to say leftists and centrists are blameless in all of this, but overtly they are generally not helping actual dictators, they aren’t trying to help the rich get richer and more powerful, and they’re trying to support minorities, workers rights, human rights, and so on.
I’m sure you can say I’m biased, but this is how I see the pieces fitting together, and why to me that it’s so troubling seeing the UN fall under the sway of some of the worst examples of bad actor countries, it’s creeping global fascism and at the moment we are one bad US election from the global tyrants and wannabe tyrants divvying up the world how they want and us little people suffering for it.
I’m not educated enough on the topic to argue that as a whole, but the article does say the Saudi ambassador was elected to the CSW unopposed.
The takeaway, for me, is that more sane people need to get involved at all levels (dog catcher, school boards, town councils, etc, all the way up).
Charbonneau said HRW tried to lobby other countries among the current 45 CSW members, which include states with much better records on women’s rights like the Netherlands, Japan, Portugal and Switzerland.
“If they all raised a big enough stink, then it wouldn’t happen,” he said. “But everyone is just quiet. Someone could call a vote, and no one seems to want to do that either, which strikes me as ridiculous.”
There’s definitely something corrupt and fuckey going on here.
The populace does not Vote at the UN.
Ay and there’s the rub. Those jobs don’t pay well at all.

Waiting for the democracy conference in North Korea and anti chemical weapon conference in Russia
What about an anti chemical propelled weapons conference?
I know! They don’t allow women to control their own bodies. Having to travel thousands of miles for medically required procedures when their lives are in danger. Women fear for their loves walking down the street. Crime is rampant. Humanitarian rights down the drain supporting genocide of an entire people…
Oh wait. That’s the USA. Hmm.
Does the UN expect people to take them seriously anymore. It’s no wonder Israel just ignores them.

after an unopposed bid
I mean, if literally nobody else made a proposal for this, what are the UN’s options? Just put it in some unprepared location? Cancel it? Do some lame virtual thingy? Sometimes you’re just dealt a shitty hand and there’s no good way to play it
This is the dumbest timeline, I swear
Wait, it’s not April 1st yet, isn’t it?
You already posted this three days ago https://lemmy.world/post/13521225
Why were they allowed to run unopposed?
