Iraq is closer to amending its marriage laws which would lower the legal age of consent from 18 to nine, allowing old men to marry young girls, according to a report in The Telegraph. Dominant Shia Muslim parties in the Iraqi Parliament have proposed an amendment to the country’s “personal status law” that could see a Taliban-style rollback of all women’s rights. If passed, the legal changes will deprive the Iraqi women of rights to divorce, child custody and inheritance as well.

I can’t really speak for the US, I was talking mainly about Europe. My country has an age of consent of 15 and I’m pretty fine with that. I think 14 is fine as well, though there would need to be some exceptions, like only with similar-age people. 12 sounds too young, but I really don’t know the specific laws of the EU countries, hopefully it’s not as simple as “you’re 12 now, you can get fucked by a persuasive 40yo and all’s fine”.
If nothing else, you most likely already hit puberty when you’re 12 which cannot really be said for 9 years old. Muslims wanting to marry 9 year olds is regular pedophilia and/or slavery. You basically buy a 9yo kid, beat her a few times a day if she doesn’t listen to what you say or doesn’t do what you want her to do, if you’re a pedo you rape her when you want to, if you’re not a pedo you wait a few years until you start raping. I don’t think anything similar is happening in any EU country at scale (there are always exceptions of course, but the difference is they have to hide it from everyone because the society is not okay with it).
And sure, everyone always argues “but it’s not the religion” and yeah, maybe they’re partially right. My two counterpoints are that their religion specifically says that their Sharia “law” is the only permissible law and way too many muslims believe that. And the other counterpoint is purely statistical: If there’s too much correlation between two things, you should maybe be a little more cautious.
Add to that my beef with adult people who believe in imaginary beings ruling over their life and murdering, raping and enslaving in the name of said imaginary beings. So on the one hand, I didn’t read the article, and from the headline saying “Iraq amends bad law” I thought they are going from marrying 9 year olds to something more sensible, but they seem to be moving in the opposite direction. I was a moron, and I do apologize for that.
On the other hand, I wasn’t saying any of this to make excuses for either the Islamic world or Iraq. It’s just that we also have so much shit to clean up on our own plate, that laughing at the Middle East seems counterprodctive as to me, it tries to relativize our own shittyness.
