    From your link, emphasis mine:

    any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

    (a) Killing members of the group;

    (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

    © Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

    (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

    (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

      With means it has to meet both criteria. Work on your reading comprehension.

      Israel says they do not intend to destroy the Palestinians, the ethnic group of Arabs, (who are 20% of Israeli citizens,) or Islamic people in whole or in part. Rather, if they are defending themselves against a belligerent hostile nation next door and intending to attack its militants, i.e., Hamas, these attacks are legal and not genocide, even if they cause significant collateral damage killing civilians.

          For an act to be genocide it must be committed with, intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group. Hamas is none of these, and that’s what Israel says they intend to destroy.

            You do realize that Hamas is an acronym, right? The English translation of what it stands for is “Islamic Resistance Movement”. If that is not a religious group, I don’t know what is.

            You also realize that Hamas is the government of Gaza, right? If that is not a national group, I also do not know what is.

              Hamas is a militant terrorist organization that is the government of Gaza, one that is violent and actively belligerent, which is what is important about them in regards to this conflict. That they happen to be Islamic does not mean a war against them is intended to be a war to destroy Islam. If you’re trying to conflate Hamas with all of Islam, as though they were the same group, I suspect a lot of Islamic people would disagree with that characterization. 18.1% of Israelis are Muslims. Clearly Israel is not intending to destroy Muslims, nor are they targeting Hamas because they are Muslim.

              You also realize that Hamas is the government of Gaza, right? If that is not a national group, I also do not know what is.

              The implication of such an interpretation is that retaliating against a hostile and actively belligerent nation would always be, by definition, genocide, which is absurd. The national group here is Palestine, not Hamas.

              It seems like you’re doing mental backflips trying to portray Israel as genocidal and they’re simply not. They are defending themselves like any country would, and showing restraint that few countries would.

                Look, man. You’re substantially editing your comments after I respond to them. You’re accusing me of conflating Hamas with all of Islam when all I said was that they are a religious group, while also accusing me of having poor reading comprehension. You’re saying that the government of a nation is not a national group. You’re claiming that Israel is defending itself while it is in the process of fighting a retaliatory war on non-Israeli soil.

                If anyone is doing mental gymnastics in this conversation, it is not me. I recommend anyone reading this to add a tag to this account saying “edits comments”
