and using lemmy feels like starting a car in the 1910s by hand cranking the engine. ie i like it but it’s a pain
i got into twitter more, but i’m trying to not engage with the stupid shit that i know is just written to drive me insane
i also, a few times, reflected off the boredom and done something productive; made spreadsheets or installed a video game [i am physically unable to get into gaming for some reason]
Relatable. I was relieved I wouldn’t be doomscrolling anymore. Then i found Lemmy, which works as a doomscroll sometimes, ut also goes down or goes slow randomly, forcing me to do something else.
I’ve found that I’m also browsing (old-school) forums now to fill the time.
The slowness is healthier, in a way. I’m reading a lot more articles than I did on Reddit, and I’m no longer a lurker.
With apps like Voyager and Memmy I’m cautiously optimistic, a few hiccups with instances going down notwithstanding.
There’s bound to be hiccups with the instance system, but I like that Lemmy has given me the power to host my own. It was honestly really satisfying to get it working and deployed on production hardware, and I wouldn’t have gotten that experience if I had just stuck to Reddit.
Ive been jumping back and forth between lemmy and 4chan.
4chan isn’t better lol
Eh, I dont mind 4chan. I used to lurk /a/ and /v/ back when Moot was still running the place. I left for reddit sometime 10 years ago when things kinda started getting stale.
I swear people on 4chan speak a different language. I can never follow what’s going on on that site and it makes me feel like a dirty diaper trying to decipher their hyper-online dialect.

Calm doon, Eminem
I’ll take that as a compliment
also the porn is just not the same
Your username suggests you already have a favorite platform for that
Xvideos is fine.
The content creators on pornhub make some interesting stuff though.
Ugh as a Virginian I do miss that platform, but I’m not uploading my pic to them…
Just get a VPN. Proton has a free tier that’s good enough.
Upload a picture of any one of the republican state reps that voted for this assinine law.
Opera browser has a built-in VPN. That should bypass the age verification no problem.
TIL about Virginia’s age verification law.
I have the same experience, but I consider it to be a positive. Lemmy isn’t trying to force an algorithm on me and retain my eyeballs. I subscribed to what I want to see, I scroll through new a bit, top day a bit, leave a comment here and there, and I do other things.
Before, I found myself bouncing between Reddit and YouTube, doing usually nothing else fun or productive. Since then, I’ve been doing more varied things, playing different games, working on programming projects. I find that I’m much more satisfied with how I spend my time.
I do still have a YouTube problem, but a lot of the stuff I watch is related to my interests and good background listening material anyway, so it’s not really stopping me from doing other things.
I guess that’s just a factor of this being a non profit thing. A user-built social media platform doesn’t have to do everything it can to retain user eyeballs for as many seconds a day as possible.
I enjoy not spending so much time on social media, but I suppose I do feel a bit of loss. I just know it’s going to better in the long run if I give my time to this Lemmy thing instead of that other place.
My Reddit feed is a lot less active than it used to be. I guess quite a few actually did quit using the product.
Opposite for me. I’m way more addicted to lemmy than I ever was to reddit.
I started reading books. A lot of books.
For a long while, I wanted to get more into reading but couldn’t be bothered to read more than a few pages a day and those seemed like a pain. Cutoff reddit and hello speed reading.
What worked for me is just to do something that makes you happy, even if it’s not computer pr phone related.
My simracing has improved greatly. Something I’ve been wanting for a while. But I still have something to do while waiting for this BLT to he ready…15 mins so far, wtf.
I can relate. That first week back on 6/12 was rough. I abstained but it was a longing somewhere near quitting cigarettes, but without the irritation and physical cravings. There was an emotional aspect to it too, like losing an old friend after 14 years.
Things were clunky over here at first, and the other client I used was like vaping 0mg. Then that client just flat broke and I tried Connect. Around that time, someone suggested sorting by hot and things got better quick. At this point, I’m good. I’ll give it time to develop and for communities to build.
I do miss some of my nerdier communities, but haven’t been back in July and have not posted since 6/12. Even the search results I get that sometimes point to Reddit, I’ll ignore. It’s like a bad breakup… Cut all ties and pretend they’re dead. After a while, you can reflect a little more clearly. For now, fuck 'em.
That’s an aspect of lemmy I love! You curate your own feeds of content, so once you’ve exhausted it for a bit….you’re done!
My screen time has dropped 30% and I’m less irritatable during my day, so I think it’s a feature, not a bug.
