On Lemmy it is more like 40 something year old neckbeards that haven’t seen the light of day in 2 decades. They claim to struggle to make friends at parties but could easily run a country.

Neither of the two points you’ve made address what I said. Maybe you misunderstood. By “MySpaced” I mean “become irrelevant”.
Being open source won’t prevent this, sadly. 4 years is still young, but if a critical mass shifts back to Reddit then Lemmy will be considered a failure.
It’s time for Lemmy devs to really think about the pain points and how to address them.
It’s clear that federation isn’t working as intended. Because of that, moderation is too difficult. Defederation has been a major drama for Lemmy, which is only being made more likely given these complaints have not been addressed.
Then there’s the curse of choice that makes gaining non-tech users a lost cause. It is leading to extreme fragmentation which makes people drift back to their busier platforms.
These issues need to be addressed or Lemmy will be MySpaced within a year.
Genuinely, what motivation does any professional content creator have for using peertube? It’s just crypto shit and conspiracy theorists and doesn’t pay content creators
Sites like reddit, Instagram, and twitter make the cognitive effort to go from signing up to using the app as low as possible. The users’ experience is considered from before they even have an account. They make sure you don’t ever see a blank page or feel like you’re battling the app to find content.
Lemmy actively puts roadblocks in the way. Server choices, the hoops you need to jump though for server memberships, and highly fragmented communities all but ensure that people will face issues when signing up.
Sadly, a lot of users here feel that because they had to overcome them, so should everyone else. Until that changes then the self-defeating cycle will continue.
If you’d told me I’d miss 2006 back in 2006 I’d have laughed.
Let the kids have their cringe phase
Okay, this is a nice sentiment but the money is long gone. It was spent when the equipment was made. It will either be scrapped or left to rust in a hangar.
This is a bit of a cynical take. $345m is not that much to the US government. It’s not going to deprive anyone in the US. Plus, what are homeless people going to do with military equipment?
If it was $345bn I’d agree but this is barely even going to register on the accounting spreadsheet.
Exactly, they can coexist, so I’m not sure why people are so against having both. Content discovery is likely to be be the biggest barrier for entry for new social media platforms, because if you don’t have a reason to stay, why would you? It’s pretty much the primary obstacle to getting people away from Reddit or Twitter and onto an alternative.
I don’t see why having chronological feeds can’t be paired with some more generic sorting or filtering systems. Nobody would be obligated to use either, you could just pick the one you want.
I get people want to see specifically what they subscribe to, and nothing else (looking at you, facebook). But I don’t see why people hate the idea of others being able to discover new content. Reddit had default subs for a long time, Twitter has trending topics, Mastodon could really do with something similar to help noobs get on-boarded.
And no - there’s no way I’m wading through the shit fountain that is Mastodon’s all posts tab on the off chance I find one interesting post. If you don’t already have interesting follows then it feels like there’s no point.
Large open source projects like Signal don’t really rely on individual donations, but instead survive off wealthy supporters or sponsors.
It depends where you go, surely?
I’ve met a fair number of numpties on Reddit but I’ve never had anyone tell me neckbeards are an oppressed group until I came to Lemmy 😂
Jokes aside, it’s easy to avoid toxic people on here since they usually announce themselves loudly. It’s easy to block users, communities, or even servers if you don’t want to see something.
All this over a meme…
You might be booksmart, not that you’re demonstrating it here, but you certainly have the emotional intelligence of a toddler. If you need to walk on eggshells around people, it would be because you’re a vapid bellend and they’re sick of your attitude.
The way you judge “everybody else” as stupid, as if intelligence is a good way to determine the value of a person, is frankly disgusting. It shows your contempt for other people.
If everywhere you go smells like shit, check your shoes. Now go do some deep thinking about that.
That’s a bit of an arbitrary figure. Also wealth isn’t really money as much as it is things.
Take a house, for example. You only really need one. The monetary value of the house depends on a few factors, but it’s primary value is that it gives you shelter. It probably fluctuates in monetary value but the actual value doesn’t change. If you cap wealth based on monetary value, how do you deal with homes in different places that are valued differently? I think it’s going to be more complicated than it seels at first glance.
Assuming you mean dollars, since everyone on the internet is American. 10mil seems like a lot all together. But if you had to feed your entire family for the rest of your life on 10mil you might struggle, depending on where you live.
Maybe you mean 10mil income per year and not overall wealth. That’s different, but I can understand this. A progressive tax system could impose a cap of sorts but tax avoidance (the legal kind) would render it useless.
I don’t have any answers, just felt like continuing the thought train.
It’s own form of bigotry haha! My sides… Yep, that’s right. You’re the most oppressed. Right up there with gamers and Christians.
Okay mate, I’m gonna leave you be before you burst a blood vessel.
You’re taking this way too personally lol
Being intelligent isn’t the joke. It’s putting on the facade of being well read that so many nerdy 20 somethings do.
Society isnt saying don’t be smart. It’s saying be less of a sweaty douchebag. You can be nerdy and fun to be around. It’s not mutually exclusive.
If my comment destroys your intellectual curiosity, then you never had any.
Exactly. It’s taking the piss out off wannabe “deep thinkers” who’ve speed ran philosophy 101 videos on Youtube. Being well read isn’t the joke. The joke is the neckbeards who have to smugly let everyone know that they read a Wikipedia article.
Ironically, this stereotype probably fits most of the ones who are kicking off. Hell, it’s essentially a profile of me. 10 years ago I was that guy saying “hey have you heard about iambic pentameter?”. That’s why I laughed so hard lmao
Reddit and AI companies are all financially backed by the same people. Anything they lose on Reddit (which they aren’t) they gain on the other side. Plus, bots make this unlikely. Who wants an AI trained on spam bots and automods?
Don’t let Spez make it sound like everyone working at Reddit is broke and needs pitying. He wouldn’t be CEO if he wasn’t on CEO pay.
I think I get the point you’re making but climate change will fuck over the same people who end up getting fucked over by war.
As is often the case, the wealthiest can deal with the side effects of climate change. The ones who will be most affected by famines and natural disasters are the poorest, most marginalised, most deprived.
I suspect it’ll make conflict more likely, not less.
