    The meme is literally correct. when you make an audio file into an mp3, it takes some of the sonic information that our brains are bad at noticing and just…completely removes it(to save storage space). if it’s a high quallity mp3 its essentially completely unnoticable. That’s why it’s psychoacoustic, it uses psychology to fool your brain into thinking it sounds better than it does, litterally.

    Psycoachoustic is basically just a big word for taking into account how our brains deal with what we hear.

    Also I’m not saying mp3 is bad, in fact I think the opposite is true. I think it’s good to think of it like being the .JPG of audio, you’re not getting the original quallity and that’s the point and unless you need to do manipulate that audio file and its a reasonable quallity then you likely won’t notice the difference.

    Ogg vorbis (.ogg) is a better codec though IMO.

  • I’m mostly just responding to your points, but if I’m trying to make any argument its that mile per mile train infrastructure is cheaper than road infrastructure when you add up all of the costs, especially the ones people normally dont consider including vehicle maintinance, extra land and infrastructure for parking, more policing, gas, time wasted on longer commutes, ect. I’m also trying to point out that the reason we can’t have nice things is because we have chosen the wrong priorities as a society, thats why we are stuck in a loop where we try to solve our car problems with more cars and car infrastructure instead of addressing the root cause of the problem.

    • massive Walmart style parking lots don’t factor if your urban planning is centered around public transit, and parking is definately one of the highest hidden costs of road infrastructure.

    • yes, when people stubbornly refuse to use rail infrastructure or when rail/transit infrastructure is prioritized less than roads/car based transportation then of course its going to be less economically viable. Economies of scale and induced demand are a huge factor here.

    • good question, and yet we still have private roads and tollroads.












  • Think of it like this: imagine if there were 2 reddit websites and users from each website could post, comment, and vote on each others website through their own website. For example, your instance(website) is Lemmy.world. mine is sh.itjust.works. I’m not commenting on lemmy.world, I’m commenting on your comment on a lemmy.world community(subreddit) using my instance(sh.itjust.works) in the same way that if you have a gmail address and I have yahoo we can still send emails to each other. Instances can block other instances as well, which is called defederating, but by default they all cross communicate with one another to deliver a (mostly) shared experience. So if you made an account on another instance, as long as it’s not defederated with the ones hosting the communities you subscribe to, you are effectively changing which servers you are using without changing the content you get.
